Background • Steve Jobs was born on February 24, 1955 in San Francisco, California, U.S and he was 56 years old when he died on October 5, 2011 in Palo Alto, California, U.S. • His cause of death was Cancer • He was an American entrepreneur and inventor and he was best known as the co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc. • His speech “ How to live before you die” was given in Stanford in 2005 • He got married with LaurenePowell in 1991 and they stayed married until he died.

SOAPSTone-Audience • This speech was directed to the students that were graduating from a collage. • Example: • “truth to be told, this is the closest I’ve gotten to a collage graduation.”
SOAPSTone-Purpose • I think the purpose of this speech is to show us to never lose faith even though things go wrong and also to follow your dreams. • “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith”
SOAPSTone-Speaker • Steve Jobs the one who started Apple , another company named NeXT, and another company named Pixar. • Examples: • “During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar”
SOAPSTone-Tone • Hopeful, fear, happiness • Sad- I think this is sad because his parents left him just because they wanted a girl. • Hopeful- I think it’s hopeful because every time something went wrong in his life his would just hope that something better would come. • Happiness- I think it’s happiness because he found everything that made him happy and his wife.
Paraphrase • “Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.” • He is saying that while he knows that he is going to die that he needs to make those big choices first before it’s too late.
Major Premise • “You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect the dots looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever.” • Steve Jobs is saying that you have to trust in something that so that the dots can connect to your future.
Ethos • “I have never graduated from collage. Truth be told, this is the closest I’ve ever gotten to a collage graduation.” • I think this is ethos because he never graduated from collage and he was the founder of Apple and also when they were designing the Mac they made the first computer typography.
Pathos • “ I returned coke bottles for the 5 cent deposits to buy food with, and I would walk 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week” • I think this is pathos because this makes you feel sadness.
Logos • “I’m pretty sure none of this would never happen if I hadn’t been fired from apple” • I think this is logos because sometimes you have to lose in order to find something better in life and this is common sense.
Repetition • “If I had never dropped in on that single course in collage, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts” • “if I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.” • I think Steve Jobs repeats this to show us that if he had never done the decisions that he had made that none of the good things that happened to him would have never happened.
