is very common. Most patients are unaware that they do this, as it occurs during their sleep. Clenching your teeth results in many tooth problems. When clenching and grinding occurs, the upper and lower teeth move back and forth which causes them to flatten each other out. This can result in cracked teeth, receding gums, pain in the nerves, and in some cases tooth lose. To fix these problems procedures such as roots canals, extractions, crowns or many others may have to be done. Grinding does not only cause problems in your teeth, but it can also result in headaches, pain in the shoulders, back, neck and ears. In order to avoid any of these problems to occur, patients can obtain a night guard. There are several types of night guards, but generally the dentist will create a custom-fitted night guard. This is the most effective as it is custom to your teeth. Impressions of teeth are made in the dental office, and then the night guard is created in a professional laboratory. It may take some time to adjust to the night guard, but due to the custom fit of the night guard it is generally fairly comfortable and patients adapt to it rapidly. The night guard is worn when you sleep, and usually only covers your top teeth. Therefore this protects your teeth when you grind them at night.
