  1. COMS 161Introduction to Computing Title: Understanding Information Technology Date: January 17, 2005 Lecture Number: 3

  2. Announcements

  3. Review

  4. Outline • Digital Information • Digital Domain

  5. The Digital Environment • Over the past decade we have been increasingly exposed to digital information in our daily lives • What are some examples of digital information? • Digital Documents • Easier to create, store, transmit and manipulate • Digital Numeric Processing • Many uses for spreadsheets

  6. The Digital Environment • More examples of digital information • Digital Music • CDs, MP3s • Digital Photography • Digital cameras, image manipulation software • Digital Graphic Arts • Advertisement, movie special effects • Digital Television • Direct TV, HDTV, TiVo

  7. The Digital EnvironmentMore Examples • More examples of digital information • Virtual Reality • Games, medicine, … • Digital Communications • Please check your cell phone at the door before class!! • The Internet • Network backbone

  8. The Digital EnvironmentMore Examples • More examples of digital information • The World Wide Web • A set of computer systems that follow certain guidelines for storing and presenting information • Web site and web pages • Browsers • Web pages/sites • Hypertext • Collectively digital information is often referred to as “media”

  9. The Digital Domain • In the past • Computers were used for numeric computation • That was then, but today • Computers used for expressing and communicating information • Digital Domain • Digitized data and the systems that handle it

  10. The Digital Domain • Two Essential Components • MultimediaInformation • The ability of modern desktop computer systems to collect, store, retrieve, display, and generally manage information in a variety of media • The integration of various kinds of information

  11. The Digital Domain • Two Essential Components (Cont.) • NetworkedCommunications • Potential for cooperative work using fully interconnected computers and computer networks • The interconnection of information in various locations

  12. The Digital Domain • Digitizing data • Converting raw data to simple numbers • An example (using image data)

  13. The Digital Domain • Digitizing data • Break up the data into small, manageable chunks

  14. The Digital Domain • Digitizing data • Average the contents of each chunk

  15. The Digital Domain • Digitizing data • Pick a number to represent the contents of each chunk

  16. The Digital Domain • Digitizing data • The quality of the digitized picture depends on the size of each chunk

  17. The Digital Domain • Once information is converted into digital form, it becomes easy to • Store (no matter what kind of information) • Copy • Combine • Modify (edit) • Share • Transmit • Taken without permission

  18. The Digital Domain • The Internet • Really a very loose collection of networks • No single entity controls it • Many kinds of information travel around it constantly • Email • News • Entertainment • Commerce • Etc.

  19. The Digital Domain • The Internet • No one validates this information • No one directly polices this information

  20. The Digital Domain • The World Wide Web (WWW) • Just a part of the Internet • Consists of all the information on the Internet that someone has made available in a particular way • Information on your computer can become part of the Web if you configure it as a web server

  21. The Digital Domain • Web Browsers • Computer programs that make it easy for anyone on the Internet to access information on the Web • Many to choose from; they all use common techniques • FireFox, Mozilla, Netscape Communicator • Internet Explorer • Cell Phones and PDAs • WebTV, …

  22. The Digital Domain • Summary • Today’s computer systems are far more than computational and text processing tools • Enable a new communication paradigm • Information can be digitized and therefore easily manipulated by computers • Computers can be networked and therefore information can be easily exchanged

  23. The Digital Domain • Summary (Cont.) • This paradigm is enhanced by the rapid expansion of the World Wide Web • The “Digital Domain” is the convergence of two technologies: • Multimedia • Networking

  24. The Digital Domain • Summary (Cont.) • Our lives are increasingly influenced by this easy availability of information • It is our responsibility to evaluate the veracity of and the right to use the information we find
