Cycling Are you safe to cycle?
Your Helmet • Make sure the helmet fits you • Straps need to be fastened securely • Helmet must not restrict vision • Should not slip off your head
Restricted Vision • Poorly fitting helmets and wearing a hood up can restrict your vision while cycling • You need to be able to see easily when looking back over your shoulder
Restricted Hearing / Distractions • Using mobile phones • Listening to MP3/personal music players • You need to be aware of what is going on around you • If you cant hear, you aren’t safe
Be Bright Be Seen • Especially in the dark! • Wear something that will get you noticed, It could save your life!
Your Bike • Before getting on your bike you need to make sure it is safe. • Brakes, Lights, Tyres, Reflectors, Seat, Handlebars, Chain and Pedals • Need to be fitted and working correctly. • There are some simple checks you should do every time before you go on your bike

Wheels • Should spin freely. Press on the tyres to check pressure, should move a bit but not easily. • Seat • Correct height for you. Not moving around. • Chain • Well oiled. If orange it is rusty. • Handlebars • Hold front wheel between your legs, you should not be able to turn the handlebars. • Brakes • Left = Back Right=Front • Pull left on and try to push the bike backwards. • Pull right on and try to push bike forwards. • The bike should not move either time
Safer Start • Walk bike to road • Safe side of bike, Why? • Looking around, check behind • Set pedal, push off • Ride in Safe Road position
How to Stop Safely • Look behind (over shoulder) • Is it safe to stop? • Move near the kerb • Slow down then stop • Move bike off the road if needed
When Cycling • Unless signalling: keep both hands on handlebars, you may need to use breaks • Give clear signals • Be aware of your surroundings • When stopping get off on “safe side” • Before you do anything: LOOK back
U Turns • Riding in safe road position • Look back to see if traffic is behind you • Look ahead to see if traffic is approaching • If the road is clear make the U turn • If the road is not clear wait at the kerb • When the turn is complete, ride on in safe road position
Passing Side Road • Check behind for cars that may overtake you and then cut across into the junction • Check in front for cars that may turn across you into the junction • Check the junction for cars pulling out in front of you • Ride past the junction in safe road position • You have the right of way
Signalling: How & When • Look behind before you signal • Signal for turning onto main roads and side roads, both left and right • Signal with arm out for a few seconds • Signal early before the junction • Return hands to handlebars for turning
Turning Left • Main roads to Side roads • Beware of cars ahead turning across you • You have the right of way for the turn • Side roads to Main roads • Give way to the main road • You may have to stop if something is coming
Turning Right • Main roads to Side roads • Beware of cars ahead turning into the side road • You have to wait for cars approaching you • Side roads to Main roads • Give way to the main road • You may have to stop if something is coming
