National Electrical Code (NEC) • Boxes must be securely fastened to building • Cable or conduit must be clamped securely to the box • Metal boxes must be grounded. Ground wire must be attached by screw or clip. • Wires in boxes must be connected to each other using wire nuts. No bare areas on wires except ground wires. • If white wire is used as hot, mark it with black tape
National Electrical Code (NEC) • Ground wires must be held together by metal clamp or wire nuts • Wires must be attached to terminals on switches and receptacles by tightening no more than one wire under one screw or spring clamp. • Positive/hot wires (black, red, or blue) are always attached to brass screws. Neutral wires (white) are attached to silver screws and ground (green) to green screws.
Wiring Basics • Standard switch box holds only 4 wires, not counting ground wires. • Only strip a minimum amount of insulation off wires. Bare wire should not be visible out of the clamp, but insulation should not be under the clamp. • Hook wires under screw clamps in a clockwise fashion.
