  3. The Beginning of a Horrific Era • The Salem witch trials occurred in colonial Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693 • Colonists believed that witches could control people’s thoughts • People thought that any inexplicable thing that happened was because of the witches.

  4. Witch Trails Several centuries ago, Christians, and those of other religions, had a strong belief that the Devil could give certain people known as witches the power to harm others in return for their loyalty.

  5. What caused the Witch Trails? • The outbreak of witch accusations in the late 17th Century is one of the most well-known events of America's colonial period • Girls who first began accusing townspeople as witches, may have very well been "acting" in the court room.

  6. How Were The Witches Tortured? The suspected witches were tortured in terrible ways like: • 156 people sat in prison charged as witches • 19 people sentenced to death were hanged • A prisoner was crushed to death by stones • Pilloried • Burned • Scalded • Drawn • Quartered • Gibbeted • Dragged • Flayed • Stretched • Racked • Booted • Iron Maidened • Or were just burned alive

  7. The Colonists • The Puritan colonists in Massachusetts at the time of the Salem witch panic believed that a witch was allied with the devil and did his dark work on earth. Basically, the human embodiment of evil.
