WHAT DO WE DO @ THE RECYCLING CENTRE? • ALUMINIUM CANS • Soft drink, beer cans etc • Crushed into 12kg bales • Each bale contains a 1000 cans • Bales are sold to a company in NZ for recovery of aluminium
WHAT DO WE DO @ THE RECYCLING CENTRE? • PLASTIC BOTTLES • Grade & plastic bottles e.g. coca cola, sprite, fanta, powerade, water bottle etc • Please remove lids & rinse bottles • Sorted by color & crushed into 20kg bales • Bales are sold to a company in NZ for reprocessing into new products
WHAT DO WE DO @ THE RECYCLING CENTRE? • GLASS BOTTLES • Recycle all glass bottles & jars • Glass is stockpiled & crushed with a digger & used as a substitute for cover soil in the landfill • Some bottles are reused for bottling beer such as COOKS LAGER
Design Life = 15 years Design Volume = 80,000m3 Landfill Age = 2.5 years Fill Volume to date = 14,000m3 Remaining Volume = 66,000m3 Remaining Life span = 12 years Landfill Completed
COLLECTION & DISPOSAL • T & M Heather Ltd under contract to MOW collects household rubbish once a week • Household rubbish is placed in the compactor truck • Recyclables such as glass bottles, plastic bottles & aluminium cans are placed in the trailer

Difficult Wastes - Cars • Recycle Cook Islands Ltd • Truck/car bodies • Corrugated roofing iron • Ferrous & Non-ferrous metals • Batteries • Fridges/ovens/washing machines • Bales are exported overseas for recovery
Difficult Wastes – Plastic Packaging • Plastic shrink wrap • Cardboard paper • Office paper • Magazines • Baled and exported overseas for reprocessing

WHAT ABOUT GREEN WASTES? • Can be readily composted at home • Decomposes naturally to harmless products • Can’t afford to use up valuable space in the landfill
WHAT ABOUT FOOD SCRAPS? • Feed to the pigs • Mix in with garden compost • Bury People are encouraged not to mix food scraps with householdrubbish
