Feasibility of European Health Examination Survey: Pilot Study

This pilot study explores the feasibility of conducting a European-wide health examination survey. It includes data collection through questionnaires, medical examinations, and blood samples, aiming to assess demographics, lifestyle factors, medical history, and various health indicators. The study involves 13 countries and is co-funded by the Public Health Programme of DG SANCO and the MHEC.

  1. The project … • Pilot European Health Examination Survey • To explore the feasibility of such a survey and its logistics on a European scale • 13 participating countries • Co-funded by the Public Health Programme of DG SANCO and the MHEC

  2. The local experience … • Contacted sample of 310 adults aged 18+ • 221 successful respondents. • Examinations carried out in specialised clinic within DHIR and mobile setup in select health centres and Gozo General Hospital • Collaboration with Primary Care & Mater Dei Hospital

  3. The data … Two phases of data collection • Questionnaire • Demographic details • Lifestyle factors • Medical history • Examination • Weight, height & waist circumference • Blood pressure • Blood lipids & sugar • Blood lead • Vision • Lung function Representative blood serum sample for further research, banked for 10 years

  4. The feedback • Respondents received a summary of the examination findings after visit. • Blood results were mailed to the participants, highlighting any abnormal levels and encouraging follow-up with family doctors. • Dissemination of health education material

  5. The history … • The most recent health survey is the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) carried out in 2008 • EHIS collects only self-reported data. • EHIS is a European legal statistical obligation. • The most recent health examination survey is the WHO-led MONICA study carried out in 1984.
