Behind Rebel Code:Inside Linux and the open source revolution By Glyn Moody Published in 2001
Linus Torvalds • Created Linux • Started programming when he was a child • Was drawn to simple programming languages such as Unix • Was fast at learning software • Always tried to test the limits of software • Was naturally inquisitive and wanted to explore
What is Linux? • It is a kernel • Needs software such as GNU to support it • Used the same way other software such as iOS are used • “Made By Hackers, For Hackers”
Open source v. closed source Closed source The source is not available to view The code has a very limited use Allows easy use of software without having any coding knowledge More help can be offered if problems arise less versions of this software Open source • “…they ability to distribute the software freely, the availability of the source code, and the right to create derived works through modification…”(Moody, 168) • Allows for continual improvement and for groups of programmers to work together
Free v. proprietary software proprietary Software with code that cannot be modified or shared Allows more creativity Stallman and the compiler Free software • The ability to copy software and make adjustments to the software • Allows individuals to use software to add on to their own programs • Allows individuals to make software better
If you have any interest in programming or the history of Linux, then this is the book for you. I thought this book was a good, easy read, and I recommend it.
