Huge Data Transfer Plenary APAN Taipei 2005 • Objectives: • Around the world there are many large remote sensor and instrumentation projects whose data output will need to be delivered to computing facilities many thousands of kilometers away. Examples of such facilities include the European eVLBI project - JIVE, and of course, the granddaddy of them all the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In some cases the expected data flow demands of these projects, in terms of throughput and duration will easily exceed by order of magnitude, that of conventional Internet traffic flows. This plenary session will try to figure out How Scientifics and Network Architects are taking up the “Huge Data Transfer” challenge that will meet these requirements.

Huge Data Transfer Plenary Planning HDT • Title: • Planning for massive data transfers - issues and challenges • BIO: • George McLaughlin (george.mclaughlin@aarnet.edu.au) is the Director of International Developments for AARNet. He joined AARNet ten years ago initially overseeing the sale of AARNet’s commercial customer base. He managed the process of establishing AARNet2, the second generation national network connecting Australia’s universities and research organizations. He guided the establishment of AARNet Pty Ltd as a separate legal entity and carrier responsible for managing and developing the AARNet network; and has been the driver for positioning AARNet as one of the world’s leading research and education network organizations.

He serves on various national and international committees associated with telecommunications and advanced networking. He has worked in the chemical, pharmaceutical, engineering, precious metal and information technology industries, has authored more than 50 research papers, and has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. He is one of the Vice-Chairs of APAN.

Huge Data Transfer Plenary HDT Champion • Title: • Towards High Performance Disk to Disk Data Transfers over High Speed Long Distance Networks • Bio: • Wade Hong (xiong@physics.carleton.ca) is the Information Technology Officer for the Faculty of Science at Carleton University. He is with the Office of the Dean of Science and the Department of Physics. Previously, he was the Technical Manager for HEPnet Canada which supports wide area networking for subatomic research across Canada. As well, he is involved with advanced network research activities with CANARIE.
Huge Data Transfer Plenary HDT deliver • Title: • Experiences Using Lightpath for SDSS Data Transfer • Bio: • Dr. Jing-Jou Yen (jjyen@nchc.org.tw) is the Division Manager of Network Operations Division in National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC). Dr. Yen worked in Bell Lab, and AT&T Lab for almost 20 years in Telecommunications network areas before joining the NCHC. He is now leading a team supporting Network Operations for TaiWan Advanced Research and Education Network (TWAREN).
Huge Data Transfer Plenary HDT deliver • Title: • Data Transfer Challenges For NOAA's Satellite Data Archives • Bio: • Chris Elvidge (chris.elvidge@noaa.gov) leads the NGDC Earth Observation Group. He received a Ph.D. in Applied Earth Science from Stanford University in 1985. From 1985 through 1988 he was a National Research Council research associate at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. From 1988 through 1998 he was on faculty in Biological Sciences and the University of Nevada, Desert Research Institute. During 1991-93 he was a visiting scientist in the EPA's global change research program office in Washington, DC. Elvidge moved to NGDC in 1994 to lead the nighttime lights program.
