A Look at Matthew 9 The Bible Speaks to our condition
Introduction • Mt 9 contains material that could command our attention for far more than just one lesson • It gives us a picture of the movement and ministry of our Lord as he meets the need of those around Him • He is very busy ministering the needs of others • We see His compassion in the giving of Himself to others • Mt 9 shows Christ constantly involved in controversy with those who disagreed with Him • The Pharisees (religious leaders) were among His harshest critics • These disagreements did not discourage Him from completing His purpose • Christ did not allow these difficulties to cause retaliation • Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Heb 13:8) • If Christ was concerned during His earthly life about suffering, we can be certain He is moved with compassion as our Lord and Savior over us today
The Lordship of Christ • Jesus as Lord over disease (Mt 9:1-7) • Jesus as Lord over life (Mt 9:9) • The call of Matthew would change his life for ever • Matthew would now us his pen to record the first gospel • Jesus as Lord over death (Mt 9:18-26) • Jesus as Lord over blindness (Mt 9:27-31) • Jesus as Lord over the demonic (Mt 9:32) • Christ is the Lord over the greatest foes we face • He wants to give us the victory over our enemies • He is worthy to be Lord over our lives and all we possess
The Importance of Faith • The faith of the paralytic and his friends brought both forgiveness and the restoration of health (Mt 9:1-7) • The faith of the grief-stricken ruler made possible our Lord’s restoration of his daughter to life (Mt 9:18-19) • The faith of the woman who suffered from a hemorrhage for twelve years brought healing to her body (Mt 9:20-22) • The faith of the two blind men who were seeking their sight was rewarded by Christ (Mt 9:27-30) • The refusal to believe in Jesus Christ places limitations on His power to change lives and circumstances that would defeat us
Conclusion • The Christ of the gospel of Matthew is the Christ whom we should worship today as Lord • We need to trust Christ as we face the painful problems of life so that He might work His miraculous changes both in and through us • Let us all spend time listening to what God would say to us through the ninth chapter of the gospel of Matthew
