Asia while bringing in $$$$

India’s Government & Society • India—world’s largest democracy; modeled after England’s WHY? • strong tradition of non-governmental and voluntary action • India also has a strong tradition of community-based people's organizations to pool labor, obtain credit, buy goods, and develop sustainable agriculture.
Gender Roles and Family • large extended families & demanding tasks for women • India's women: 55-80 % of the total farm labor. • women denied a share of their father‘s/husband's land, which goes to the sons (although laws allow them to inherit land) • Varied levels of education and roles within the family for women depending on location and socio-economic level (rural/low SES vs. urban/high SES) • When a woman DOES earn an income, it benefits the family ($$ goes towards children, nutrition)
EDUCATION • India—world’s third largest educated population in science and technology, YET • India, ranks first in illiteracy; (30% of the global total) • literacy rates (59.5%) --total population:male: 70.2% & female: 48.3% • In India, educational enrollment of girls is 47%, 62% for males
Role of Woman in Indian Society • Educating a man is educating an individual, while educating a woman is educating a family. • --Mahatma Gandhi • Educated girls are more likely to have smaller families (control population growth) and healthier children, as well as increased income. • Income earned by women benefits the family, since women tend to spend their income on food and child nutrition.
