Aims of the programme • Aims to get all children to at least a level 2a • Children working above this level work on comprehension and other reading and writing activities in their groups • Children are assessed regularly so groupings are fluid and children may move often to ensure they are always targeted at their level • 6 Principles – Participation Positive Teaching/Praise Pace Purpose Passion Perseverence
How does it work? Children: • Learn 44 sounds and matching letters/letter groups • Learn to blend sounds to read words • Read lots of specially written books This is decoding
How does it work? Children: • Talk a lot about what they have read to show they understand • Listen to and discuss other ideas to deepen understanding This is comprehending

Graphemes • A grapheme is a sound written down • English has more than 150 graphemes • For example /igh/ is one grapheme – one way of spelling that sound. • It is a very complex code! • (In Spanish, there are 29 graphemes, and 24 phonemes – a much easier language to learn!)

What’s new or different? • New reading books for the classroom and to read at home • When children bring home a Ditty or storybook they will have already practised it at school. • Spellings will not be sent home initially – take place in RWI groups • Individual reading – teachers will not write in reading records for individuals • Guided Reading – takes place in RWI groups • Children marking own work
