RAINBOWS By: Anderson
How are the colors made in a rainbow? • White light separates into different colors on entering the raindrop because red light is refracted by a lesser angle than blue light. On leaving the raindrop, the red rays have turned through a smaller angle than the blue rays, producing a rainbow.
Why is a rainbow curved? • The reason a rainbow is a smooth curve is because it is the *angle*between the light entering on a raindrop, and the light exiting theraindrop, that determines what color is seen. Italso depends on the fact that raindrops are, on average, roughlyspherical. The path from sun to raindrop to viewer's eye includesthe angle, and all the raindrops located so that the angle has aparticular value, will contribute to a particular color of therainbow.
Why can’t you see where a rainbow ends and begins • It is physically impossible to reach the end of a rainbow. But in fairy tale stories you may come across people finding it, especially in Ireland with the legend of the leprechaun. Hope this helps.
What is a White Rainbow? • It is a rainbow that appears at night and it has no color because it is night and there is not a lot.
