Career Destinations Career Destinations Centre Building 37, Highfield Campus Opened October 2009 by Vice Chancellor, Don Nutbeam Students, Alumni and staff are welcome to utilise our reference and loans materials. We also store publications which you are welcome to take and our staff will be happy to assist with specific enquiries. We have a bespoke section of PGR materials within the centre and we look to expand our resources in the coming months.

  7. Career Destinations Bespoke WebPages for PGRs Based on focus group feedback from our researchers we identified that our web resources were an area for improvement. As a response we have expand this provision by over 1500% since October 2009 with the launch of a bespoke PGR careers site: www.soton.ac.uk/careers/pgr Receiving over 150 unique visitors per week • The site includes information on: • Upcoming Events & Opportunities • Support & Resources For Researchers • PGR Alumni Career Stories • Job Searching

Career Destinations Bespoke Training Courses • We run a range of courses throughout the year aimed at our research students: • Effective CVs and Job Applications • Interview Skills • Personality – a clue to your career • Prepare for the Fair - PGR • Volunteering and the PGR • Networking – internationalise your research • The Postdoctoral Job Search • Each course is marketed in collaboration with the Graduate Centre Further Details can be found at: www.soton.ac.uk/careers/pgr/events/upcoming

  11. Career Destinations Skills Enhancement Volunteering There are many opportunities to engage in life outside of the research field while at University. We encourage PGRs to consider undertaking some extra curricular activities to establish an evidence base of skills and to gain a boarder perspective on life. Career Destinations The 5 Steps to Success: • 1 Know your market • Identify areas of research excellence • Source areas of best practice • Identify barriers (financial/RCUK restrictions etc) • 2 Source easy wins (Rome wasn’t built in a day) • Locate amiable academics/researchers • Secure top-level support/sponsorship • Sell benefits to host organisations • Devise a marketing strategy (cost/benefits) • 4 Market opportunities appropriately • Motivate researchers and academics • Target marketing with your networks • 5 Monitor and collate feedback • Positive news breeds positive news • Resource the project appropriately
