  1. Janie is a 16 year old girl…who has had a very different childhood.

  2. Her mother abandoned her at her grandmother’s. She took good care of her…but she has now arranged for Janie to be married at 16, to a much older man.

  3. Logan Killicks, her husband, is a nice man, but all he wants her for is do keep up the house and do labor.

  4. Janie does notlike her life, or her husband. When a charmingman by the name of Joe Starks arrives one day, she runs away and marries him.

  5. They travel to Eatonville, an all black town, where Joe hopes to become a leader.

  6. Joe helps to build the town and becomes mayor, postmaster, storekeeper and the biggest land owner in town.

  7. Joe does not let Janie interact with anyone. Their marriage begins to fall apart.

  8. Shortly after a major fight, Joe becomes ill and dies. Janie feel free once again.

  9. Many suitors begin to court Janie, and she falls in love with Tea Cake, a man 12 years younger then her.

  10. Despite public criticism, they marry and Janie moves with Tea Cake to Jacksonville.

  11. Their first few weeks of marriage are hard; Tea Cake steals her money and runs, but returns and apologizes.

  12. They work things out and move to the Everglades, to work together as harvesters.

  13. Being friendly people, Tea Cake and Janie quickly become great friends with many people in the town.

  14. Two years after the were married, Janie, Tea Cake, and their town are hit by a horrible hurricane.

  15. A month or so after the disaster, Janie returns to Eatonville, without her husband.

  16. The town becomes abuzz with questions and gossip.What happened to Tea Cake? Whyhas Janie returned alone?
