WHY DID THE USA NOT JOIN THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS? • 1) Wilson’smain opponents • 2) Immigrants • 3) Business Leaders • 4) Americans who suffered the WW1 directly • 5) Anti-British or anti-French Juan Pablo Carreira/ Tomás Akrabian
1) WILSON’S OPPONENTS • Wilson’s main opponents were immigrants (Germans specially), business leaders, Americans who suffered the WW1 directly, anti-British and anti-French. They saw the creation of the League as an ideal opportunity to defeat him. SERPENT: International Strife STRIFE: Lack of agreement
2) IMMIGRANTS • The League was impossible to separate from the Treaty of Versailles, and the League was supposed to enforce the Treaty. One of the reasons why the USA didn’t join the League was that many Americans hated the Treaty itself. Also USA had millions of German immigrants that had never approved that the USA joined the WW1 by the side of the Allies.
3) BUSINESS LEADERS • Another reason was that many Americans were worried about the economic of joining the League, because the USA promised to solve all international problems, no matter the cost. Also, because business leaders wanted the USA to became a powerful country by isolationism.
4) AMERICANS WHO SUFFERED THE WW1 DIRECTLY • A group of Americans were shocked because of the massacre that that WW1 had been. And they wanted the USA to stay out of any dispute so that no more Americans died protecting people that were not Americans.
5) ANTI-BRITISH & ANTI-FRENCH • The last reason was that many Americans were anti-British, anti-French or even they believed in freedom so they didn’t want their countries to protect colonies and empires of Britain or France. Also, why should the USA go to war defending Britain or France while many people (Americans) hated those countries?
