Research Says… • Changing instruction is about changing behavior. • There is a disparity between what people know and what they do (Johnson, 2009) • You cannot “teach” an adult anything. They pull from prior experiences to determine what behaviors & practices they will adopt. • What we do consistently is what we value (Hall, 1994)
What we need to change behaviors and practices • People Need to Understand Why? (Rost, 1993) • People Need to Clearly Need to Understand Goals/Expectations (Proehl, 2001) • People Need to Develop Common Language to Use When Discussing Topics Related to the Difficulties of Personal and Professional Transformation. • People Need a Safe Environment to Challenge their Assumptions and Reflect on their person and their practice (Kegan, 1994)…and it helps to have someone to facilitate the experience.
