Gather Your Facts • You will need to summarize your team’s findings from your reading and lab so others will understand your portion of this lab • You will need to complete a graphic organizer with key elements to your topic
Volcanoes Period 3 1stFinding: Flat dark lava plains are found on the moon. On Maria, which means sea in Latin. Key elements from Volcano Reading: Magma is made from dissolved gases, crystals, and melted rock! 3rd Finding: Olimpus Mons is the largest shield volcano in the solar system. Lab Finding: Pressure provided liquid to flow out of the crater
Earthquakes Period 3 1stFinding: The build up of stress eventually causes rock to break along fault lines Key elements from Earthquake Reading: 2ndFinding: Extreme temperature changes causes fracturing. 3rdFinding:Asteroids or comets can fracture a location’s surface. Lab Finding: The shifting of the earth causes the landform to crack. The craters filled in!
Wind Erosion Period 3 1stFinding:Wind is a gas in motion Key elements from Wind Erosion Reading: 2ndFinding: Wind can only exist with planets that have atmosphere. 3rd Finding: Mars, Earth, and Venus have wind. Lab Finding : The lightest materials/ flour and coco blew away easily. The heavier particle (sand) slightly moved
Water Erosion Period 3 1st Finding: Canyons are formed by water erosion. Key elements from Water Erosion Reading: 2nd Finding: Complex stream systems can resemble the body’s nervous system! 3rd Finding:Vall Mariner is as wide as the USA. Lab Finding : Water took its natural course downward through the sand. Gravity took the water down its path. Erosion was greatest at the river’s source !
Volcanoes Period 4 1st Finding: Magma is made up melted rock and gases. Key elements from Volcano Reading: 2nd Finding: Dark flat lava plains cover about 17 percent of the moon’s surface. 3rd Finding: Volcanoes have dark peaks with long lava flows! Lab Finding : Pressure was a critical part of the release of gases! The crater was filled with the liquid.
Earthquakes Period 4 1st Finding: Earthquakes are how the outer layer of planets can shift and break. Key elements from Earthquake Reading: 2nd Finding: Extreme temperature changes from night and day can cause these fractures. 3rd Finding: If an asteroid or comet hits a planet/surface it cause fracturing or an earthquake. Lab Finding : The push and pull (Plate tectonics) of our earth causes cracks!
Wind Erosion Period 4 1st Finding: Planets w/o atmosphere can not have wind erosion. Because there is no wind. Key elements from Wind Erosion Reading: 2nd Finding: Boulder fields on Mars resemble deserts on earth because of wind erosion. 3rd Finding: Wind is a gas! Lab Finding : Wind is very powerful and can change the way our earth looks. The heaviest material takes longer to erode. The lightest materials erode quickly!
Water Erosion Period 4 1st Finding: Water usually flows from high to low land. Gravity 101 Key elements from Water Erosion Reading: 2nd Finding: Flowing water cuts canyons into the highlands. EX: Grand Canyon. 3rd Finding: Large boulders can be eroded with running water! Lab Finding : The water made a channel. Most of the erosion took place at the source of the river. The eroded material was transported to the river’s mouth.
Volcanoes Period 5 1stFinding: Magma is made up of melted rock from crystals and dissolved gases. Key elements from Volcano Reading: 2nd Finding: Flat lava plains cover roughly 17% of the moon’s surface! 3rd Finding: Most shield volcanoes have dark peaks with lava flowing from them! Lab Finding : Pressure causes the eruption of volcanoes
Earthquakes Period 5 1st Finding: Temperatures can causes fracturing! Key elements from Earthquake Reading: 2nd Finding: Tectonics is the study of the outer layer of a planet. 3rd Finding: When a rock is stretched, it creates large valleys! Lab Finding : The push and pull of the earth causes cracks!
Wind Erosion Period 5 1st Finding: Wind is gas in motion Key elements from Wind Erosion Reading: 2nd Finding: The thinner the atmosphere the faster the wind blows on that planetary surface. 3rd Finding: Wind can only exist with planets with an atmosphere. Earth, Mars, and Venus! Lab Finding :The lightest materials blew away! The sand was heavy so it barely moved!
Water Erosion Period 5 1st Finding: There was water on Mars! Key elements from Water Erosion Reading: 2nd Finding: Complex drain patterns resemble your nervous system. 3rd Finding: The Grand Canyon was formed by running water! Lab Finding : The water went down the sand. (Gravity) The sand eroded the most at the source.
Volcanoes Period 8 1st Finding: The volcanoes on Venus have unusual circular domes. Key elements from Volcano Reading: 2nd Finding: The eruption of Magma causes volcanoes. 3rdFinding:Magma is up of melted rock, crystals, and gases. Lab Finding : The pressure from plate tectonics allows volcanoes to erupt.
Earthquakes Period 8 1st Finding: Extreme changes in temperatures can cause EQs. Key elements from Earthquake Reading: 2nd Finding: Tectonics is how the outer layer of a planet shifts and breaks. 3rd Finding: Fossae is the set of valleys on Mars. Lab Finding : The push and pull of the earth causes EQs
Wind Erosion Period 8 1st Finding: Mars has been eroded by wind! Key elements from Wind Erosion Reading: 2nd Finding: Wind only exists on Mars, Venus, and Earth! 3rdFinding: Wind is a gas. Venus has different speeds of winds due to its atmosphere. Lab Finding : Heavy particles stay put. While light materials were blown on Ashwin’s phone!
Water Erosion Period 8 1st Finding: Canyon on Mars was formed by water erosion. Much like the Grand Caynon. Key elements from Water Erosion Reading: 2nd Finding: Water typically flows from high to lowlands. Gravity 101 3rd Finding: The Grand Canyon is actually smaller than any canyon on Mars. Lab Finding : The erosion was greatest near the source. The sediment moved towards the mouth!
Attention!!! • You will need to copy notes into your notebook and use them when it is time to complete the summary for this unit.
