  1. POWER FLUCTUATIONS Computer Systems

  2. Power Fluctuations • Voltage is the force that moves electrons through a circuit • Unsteady voltages are called power fluctuations • Power fluctuations can cause data loss or hardware failure

  3. Blackout • Total loss of power to an area for a period of time • Can be caused by blown fuse, damaged transformer, downed power line • Protect with Standby generator and/or uninterruptable power supply (UPS) battery

  4. Brownout • Reduced voltage level below 80% of normal voltage that lasts for a period of time • Computer equipment might try to draw more current and overheat • Use uninterruptable power supply (UPS) to provide backup power for 5-15 minutes

  5. Power Surges • Sudden increase in voltage • Can be caused by a large user of electricity shutting down • Can adversely affect systems • Surge protector or voltage regulator

  6. Power Sag • A sudden decrease in voltage that lasts less than a second • Caused when high powered electrical devices come on line • Can cause computer system to slow down or crash

  7. Electrical Noise • Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) • Caused by electrical equipment, power lines, storms • Distorts signals • Keep distance from computers • Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) • Occurs in wireless networking when • Radio transmitters and other devices use the same frequency • Data loss or poor performance

  8. Surge Protector • Protects against sudden surges in voltage • Inexpensive • Acts as a gatekeeper and does not allow excess voltage to pass through to computer • Surge protector will break instead of harm to computer

  9. Computer Safety • Write a one page essay on what you have learned about Keeping You and Your Computer Safe • Include: • Electrostatic discharge • Environmental concerns • Power Fluctuations
