Angus • Debuted in the United States in 1873 • “improved calving ease, growth, unsurpassed carcass quality, ample milk, fertility and good temperament” • Black or Red Angus • 270,000 annual registrations www.angus.org
Beefmaster • Began in 1930’s • Crossing of Hereford, Shorthorn, and Brahman • Six essentials: Weight, Conformation, Milking Ability, Fertility, Hardiness and Disposition • No color requirement but is usually a brownish-red • 40,000 annual registrations www.beefmasters.org

Chianina/Chiangus • Came to the United States in 1975 • “unique vigor, growth, extra carcass value and attractive-ness genes” • One of the oldest breeds of cattle in the world • 6,700 annual registrations www.chicattle.org
Gelbvieh • Began in 1850 • Solid colored red-yellow or black • Calves- “excellence in growth, muscling and marketability” • Cows- “milking ability, fertility and quiet temperament” • 32,000 annual registrations www.gelbvieh.org
Hereford • Established in England in 1742 • Known for characteristic white markings on the head and under belly • Shown as either polled or horned • 110,000 annual registrations www.hereford.org
Limousin • Been around since the 1700’s in France and Europe • “muscle and efficiency, along with flexibility - the most significant strength of this powerful genetic blend” • Either black or red • 49,000 annual registrations http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/cattle/limousin/
Maine-Anjou • Began in France at the beginning of the 19th century • Bred Durham cattle to Mancelle cattle • “excels in performance/feed efficiency, disposition and superb carcass traits” • 12,000 annual registrations www.maine-anjou.org
Shorthorn • Founded in 1726 by Robert Bakewell • Either red or white and can be mixed in those two colors • The amount of milk produced by the cow is a huge asset • 22,000 annual registrations http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/cattle/shorthorn/
Simmental • Oldest and most widely distributed breed in the world • Known for their production of milk, butter , and cheese and their use as a draught animal • Fourth in the nation in annual registrations- 44,000 http://www.ansi.okstate.edu/breeds/cattle/simmental/
