Logic 8: Identifying Mood and Figure. The “mood” of a syllogism refer to the statements of a syllogism, and can be identified by letter. All mammals are air-breathers. (A) Some sows are mammals. (I) Some sows are air-breathers. (I) Therefore, the “mood” of this syllogism is AII.
E N D
The “mood” of a syllogism refer to the statements of a syllogism, and can be identified by letter. • All mammals are air-breathers. (A) • Some sows are mammals. (I) • Some sows are air-breathers. (I) • Therefore, the “mood” of this syllogism is AII.
Let’s try some together! • Identify the mood of the following syllogisms: • No geese are felines. • Some birds are geese. • Therefore some birds are not felines. • This syllogism is an EIO mood syllogism.
Some mammals are not horses. • No horses are purple. • Some things that are purple are not horses. • This syllogism has been written in the OEO form.
All studentsare real. • No griffins are real. • No griffinsare students. • This is an AEE-mood syllogism.
Figure • Remember how many different ways the major and minor terms can be arranged in the major and minor premises? • Four!
“The Four Figures” M P P M M P P M S MS MM SM S S P S P S P S P 1 2 3 4
Which figure is this syllogism? All M is P. No M is S. Some S is not P. This is a “third figure” syllogism. We would call it an AEO-3 syllogism.
Which figure is this syllogism? Some P is not M. Some M is S. Some S is not P. • This is a “fourth figure” syllogism. • This is an OIO-4 syllogism.
Name the mood and figure. All X is Y. Some Z is Y. Some Z is X. • This is an AII-2 syllogism.
Trick Question Some S is M. Some M is P. Some S is P. • This is a III-1 syllogism. Why? • The syllogism is not in standard order. The major and minor premises are reversed!
Create a syllogism! • Using S for your minor term, P for your major term, and M for your middle term, we will now create our own syllogisms. • Hint: First, position the middle terms according to the figure (1,2,3,4). • Then, position the major and minor terms, starting with the conclusion (that’s easy!). • Finally, add the quantifiers and copulas.
AEE-4 Your answer should look exactly like this: All P are M No M are S No S are P
IAI-3 Some M are P. All M are S. Some S are P.
EIO-4 No P are M. Some M is S. Some S is not P.
