How we do it: As the second largest water and waste water utility company in the UK we require lots of energy to run our offices and operations. Severn Trent already generates the equivalent of 35% of our own energy use from renewable sources. This energy is used at Severn Trent Water sites or exported to the national grid. We are working to increase our energy production from renewable sources even further, to 50% of our consumption by 2020. Add Footer Text

What is an apprenticeship? • Apprenticeships are full time paid jobs with training • Apprentices can be new or current employees • More Higher and Degree Apprenticeships are widening access to the professions and providing higher level technical skills that employers need to improve productivity • Apprenticeships give young people an equally valid career route as going to university • In England there are grants or funding to employ an apprentice Add Footer Text
What are the requirements? • If your organisation employs an apprentice it is a requirement to pay the apprentice at least the minimum wage during their placement. • The apprentice is required to: • work with experienced staff • learn job-specific skills • study for a work-based qualification during their working week, e.g. at a college or training organisation Add Footer Text
Why did I choose an apprenticeship? • In and out of education from 16 – 19 having various (Aimless) part time jobs. • Didn’t want to go to university as I was slightly fed up of the education system by that point. • Didn’t fancy leaving Uni with £30,000+ debt after seeing my older sister do the same and still struggle to gain a decent job after (Even though she had a degree!). • Felt I could make an impression on a large employer if ‘I could get my foot in the door’. My experience as an apprentice • Joined Severn Trent Water as an Apprentice Operational Technician in August 2015 • Became an Apprentice Champion and helped mentor future apprentice intakes. • After 1 year I decided that the ‘on the tools’ career wasn’t for me. • Currently Team Leading/Project managing a team in The Brathay National Apprentice Challenge • Future goal – to complete my HNC whilst working towards a senior/management role after complete my apprenticeship.
