Applications ofipath: • Forum for consultations • Primary consultations for pathologists in the periphery with university centers • Consultations with international faculty • Interactive case discussions with international faculty • Multidisciplinary expertise inallfields • Of histopathology (GI,GYN, Neuro etc) • Of Haematopathology (BM, Lymph nodes, Flow etc) • Questions can be asked both ways

  3. Implications for Patient care: Consultationswilllead to improved patient care: • A 3 year old girl referred to the Ophthalmology Unit, Kenyatta National Hospital: • Left sided proptosis - 10 days • Hotness of body • Joint pains • Sore throat.

  4. Cranial and orbital CT scans done found a left sided orbital mass: • DDx: • orbital abscess, retinoblastoma and acute myeloid leukemia • Treated with antibiotics with no response • Surgery for ‘access’ drainage performed; BMA

  5. iPath discussions: Malignant tumor Blasts in BM

  6. Eureka COMMENTS: • Diagnosis – AL, AML most likely • Suggestions for improvement of images, techniques • Different disciplines – histopathology and haematology need to ‘talk to each other !’

  7. Teaching applications • Specific Teaching presentations: • Excellent photographs, pictures can be used as teaching material for teaching sessions • Teaching groups where cases are posted for teaching and larger groups can participate

  8. Future Directions • Positive impact on pathology, haematology for the different interactive groups that can participate • More interaction between the different pathology disciplines • Impact on patient care
