  1. Hello! Please have OUT your HOMEWORK to be stamped. Attach the notes page/cards from yesterday. Have GRADING PENS OUT ready to use. Complete your SKILL BUILDER NOW!

  2. About 20 miles About 175 sections F (1, 10) and (5, 60) G (1, 20) and (5, 70) H (1, 72) and (5, 55) J (1, 90) and (5, 20)

  3. Constructing a Scatterplot: Example #4 No Correlation Summary: There does not appear to be a correlation between the number of pets a student owns and the student’s height.

  4. Line of Best Fit TEKS 8(5)(D)

  5. What is the line of best fit? The line of best fit, or trendline, is a line that represents the correlation between two variables on a scatterplot. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Oldfaithful3.png

  6. A line of best fit… Does Does NOT necessarily • Reflect the general relationship between variables in a data set • Include or connect every point in a data set • Show exactly what will happen • Help to make reasonablepredictions about what could happen

  7. Example #1 Line of Best Fit • Follows the trend of the data series • Hasabout as many points above the line as there are below it. By looking at the line of best fit, we can extrapolate that a student who studies for three hours is likely to earn an A on the test.

  8. How to Draw a Line of Best Fit Method for Approximation 1. Draw a shape on the scatter plot that encompasses most of the points in your data series. 2. Draw a line that bisects the shape. 3. Verify that your trend line is reasonable. Make adjustments, if necessary.

  9. Example #2 Approximate the line of best fit. Based on your line, estimate the annual income of a person who has 22 years of education.

  10. Points to Remember: • A trend lines may or may not pass through one or morepoints on the scatterplot. • Trend lines do not always begin at or pass through the origin. • Extrapolation goes beyond the given data and is not always accurate.

  11. Line of Best Fit End of Show
