USING PROPERTIES TOSOLVE TWO-STEP EQUATIONS • Solving two-step equations requires us to use the reverse of the order of operations: • First, you must undo all addition and subtraction. • Then, undo all multiplication and division.
Example… 3n – 6 = 15 3n – 6 = 15 3n = 21 3n = 21 + 6 + 6 3 3 n = 7 Check: 3(7) – 6 = 15 21 – 6 = 15 15 = 15
Examples… • 15x + 3 = 48 • t - 10 = -6 4
SOLVING PROBLEMS WITHTWO-STEP EQUATIONS • Lynne saves $45 each week. She now has $180. She plans to save for a trip to the Bahamas. Find how many weeks (w) she will take to save $900. • Take what she has +what she saves per week and make that equal to what she needs to save. 180 + 45w = 900 45w = 720 w = 16 - 180 - 180 45 45 Check: 180 + 45(16) = 900 180 + 720 = 900 900 = 900
Example… • Jacob bought four begonias in 6-in. pots and a $19 fern at a garden center. He spent a total of $83. Solve the equation 4p + 19 = 83 to find the price (p) of each begonia.
