The Development of a Pavement Management System at Fermilab Through the Implementation of Micro PAVER 5.1 Lakelle Pritchett Southern University and A&M College Civil and Environmental Engineering Department FESS IMG Supervisor: Randy Ortgiesen SIST Final Presentation
To establish and maintain a dependable base from which physics and other Fermilab programs can be accomplished without interruption Fess Mission Statement SIST Final Presentations
Objective • To create a Pavement Management System, consisting of empirically based pavement assessments and distress identifications, leading to a more objectified future plan for road maintenance and repair at Fermilab SIST Final Presentations
Specific Objective of a PMS • To determine the extent and severity of pavement deterioration • To determine the causes of deterioration • Find plausible rehabilitation alternatives and techniques • Estimate the life cycle cost for each rehabilitation alternative or technique SIST Final Presentations
Developed by the Army Corps of Engineers in Champaign, IL, to help the DOD “Pavements should be managed, not simply maintained” First version released in 1981 Development was supported by the US Air Force, US Army, US Navy, Federal Aviation Administration, and the Federal Highway Administration Uses Pavement Condition Index (PCI) Integrates with GIS Overview of Micro PAVER SIST Final Presentations
Freeze Thaw Cycle • Pavement shrinks in cold climate • Cracks expand • Thawing ice adds to crack expansion • Rubber filling is used to help increase pavement life expectancy SIST Final Presentations
Data Collection • Inventory data collection -construction history -pavement composition -calculated area configurations Network, branch, section and sample unit divisions Distress Identification SIST Final Presentations
Sample Inventory Data SIST Final Presentations
Traffic Counting & Pavement Use • When compared with previous Fermilab traffic counts done by Chuck Federowicz, it was found that the weekly average inbound traffic count of Batavia Road has decreased by nine percent from 1995 to the present SIST Final Presentations
Sample Average Weekly Traffic Counts SIST Final Presentations
Data Analysis SIST Final Presentations
Data Analysis • Graphic representation of Pavement the PCI produced by Micro PAVER 5.1, Pavement Condition vs. Time • Maintaining a pavement above the critical PCI is more cost efficient than that below SIST Final Presentations
Conclusions • With the needed inventory data collected and distress identification completed, a Pavement Management System for Fermilab is soon to be developed with the allowance of additional time SIST Final Presentations
Recommendations • Contact persons affiliated with a newly implemented program before use • Establish and maintain a relationship with programmer and others experienced in working in the related field throughout research SIST Final Presentations
