Speech Times • 1 pro- 4 minutes • 1 con- 4 minutes • Crossfire- 3 minutes • 2 pro- 4 minutes • 2 con- 4 minutes • Crossfire- 3 minutes • Pro summary- 2 minutes • Con summary- 2 minutes • Grand crossfire- 3 minutes • Pro final focus- 2 minute • Con final focus- 2minute • Prep time = 2 minutes, per team

  3. Defining Public Forum Debate Public Forum Debate The debate should • Is a team event that advocates or rejects (Pro or Con) a position posed by the resolution. A central tenet of the debate is that the clash of ideas must be communicated to the citizen judge. • Display solid logic • Utilize evidence but not be driven by it • Present a clash of ideas • Counter the arguments of the opponents (rebuttal) • Communicate ideas with clarity, organization, eloquence, and professional decorum

  4. Topics • You will always have a new (current event) as a topic. For example last year the topics that we saw were about Obama’s plan to send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan. Or Merit pay based on student achievement. The topics will start out by saying Resolved: • For instance-resolved: Private sector investment in human exploration is preferable to public sector investment

WARRANTS!!!! • You need these to survive and conquer. • A well given speech is always supported by facts and warrants are just those. • Example: I believe we shouldn’t pull troops out of Afghanistan. I think this because according to General Thompson of the U.S. Army, the ISAF needs our help and they won’t prosper from us leaving. • The statement from General Thompson would be a warrant because it would bolster your argument with someone of importance agreeing with you.

  6. Framework • Framework is essntial. It give the debate perspective and makes your arguments better organized and understandable • Framework includes defining words and stating a goal or impact of your argument. • Example: For the clarification of my judge, I will define the words in the resolution. (defines words). We affirm this resolution because it saves lives • (should be said by speaker one at the beginning of the debate)

  7. Contentions • The way you word contentions can make them sound more organized • Each contention can be outlined in the following format: • Claim-what your trying to prove • Warrant-evidence to support claim • Impact-why do arguments matter

HELPFUL HINTS FROM YOUR HOMIE D-WEIG…SPEECH WISE • Speaker A needs to address the teams main ideas and Speaker B is the rawest speaker and needs to help defend the contentions that were argued against by the other team. • HELP YOUR TEAMMATE IF THEY ARE IN TROUBLE • SHARE GOOD POINTS AND TELL THEM ABOUT BAD POINTS • A GOOD TEAM WILL ALWAYS DISCUSS THEIR SPEECHES SO THEY NOW WHAT IS GOING TO OCCUR. • CONFIDENCE IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS. THE MORE YOU SOUND LIKE YOUR RIGHT, THE BETTER CHANCE YOU HAVE OF BECOMING VICTOR! • ALWAYS USE WE WHEN SPEAKING…..NEVER SAY I…YOU ARE A TEAM, YOU’RE NOT ALONE!!!

HELPFUL HINTS CONTINUED….CROSS EX • HELP YOUR TEAM MATE IF THEY NEED QUESTIONS TO ASK • NEVER GIVE INTO YOUR OPPONENTS QUESTIONS…DEFEND YOUR POSITION REGARDLESS OF IF YOUR RIGHT OR WRONG • MAKE SURE YOU DON’T LET THE OTHER TEAM USE ALL THE CROSS EX TIME • IN THE GRAND CROSS FIRE, IF A QUESTION IS DIRECTED TOWARDS YOUR TEAMMATE AND THEY STUMBLE, THERE IS NO RULE AGAINST HELPING THEM OUT

HOW TO INTIMIDATE BY A-THOMP • Speak loudly, stand tall, and give the death stare at all times during the debate. • Before the debate while you are standing outside your room, don’t say one friendly word to your opponent. Just stare at them with an evil grin on your face.] • Show no mercy. If your opponent slips, tear them up so bad that they want to drop out of debate. • Interrupt during cross-ex. This will cause your opponent to think twice about asking a question the next time.

  11. OR! The polite approach by DWEIG • Talk clearly and not condescending with a polite tone. • Act like you are smarter and more mature than your opponents. • Don’t give into their yelling and screaming, just make them seem dumb but be nice about it. • If you are going to destroy your opponents, which you must, do it politely. This approach will make your opponents think you are a god. • Amen.
