3.1 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory ArTec Archives on the Techniques and Materials of Architecture and Industrial Design collects and archives examples of materials, products and innovative techniques for architecture and industrial design, for use by researchers, students and professionals. The Archives also organizes, catalogues and exhibits these materials, as well of those of the LAMA, LabSCo and TerraLab labs. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • analysing, testing and implementing research methods and techniques, and their consequent impact on technologically innovative teaching regarding design materials, products and techniques of design; • collecting, analysing, mounting, cataloguing and disseminating the archives of antique and modern materials; • building relationships with manufacturers; • developing activities with other labs, in particular, with the FisTec Environmental Engineering Physics Lab. 3.2 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory CIRCE Cartography Lab The lab operates and does research in the field of map-making and the representation of urban and regional phenomenon. It collects, retrieves, archives, processes and disseminates its cartografic, photographic, aerial, satellite and surveying patrimony online and through information systems. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • studying antique and modern maps (physical support and their metric, semantic and symbolic content); • producing special, technical, thematic and digital maps, orthophoto maps, historical and current photo maps; • collecting, retrieving, filing, processing, disseminating and distributing online its cartographic, photographic, aerial photographic, satellite image collections and as well as analogue and digital surveys from various sources; • managing analogue and digital archives of documentary materials; • cooperating with cultural entities and the official producers of documentation, to exchange materials and develop products of common interest; • continuous monitoring of the production and availability of digital maps in raster and vector formats on an urban and regional scale; • scanning, numbering and geo-referencing maps, enabling institutions and producers to exchange materials. 3.3 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory CIRCE Photogrammetry Lab The lab focuses on the technical and scientific issues involved in the surveying and digital representation of architecture; it has considerable experience in surveying cities, geographical regions and objects (statues, moulding, artefacts, stones). The tools and techniques employed include terrestial topography, GPS, photogrammetry (close range and aerial), laser-scanning and image processing. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • studying and applying new technologies in the fields of topography, photogrammetry and laser scanning; • verifying metric accuracy and improving processing programmes in the field of surveying, the rendition of land and aerial photograms, remote sensing images and digital photogrammetry; • using and testing analytical photogrammetric techniques for the digital representation of architectural and the territory; • verifying and processing data collected by terrestrial laser scanner; • accurate topographical and photogrammetric surveys on an architectural and urban scale; • projecting, measuring, calculating and compensating topographic data; • image processing; • producing software for educational and research purposes; • experimental use of 3D scanners for small scale objects. 3.4 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory CIRCE Geographic Information Lab The lab is active in the field of Geographic Information Systems, making use of the major GIS software tools on the market and by developing applications with Open Source tools. It designs and develops online services and makes it possible to download the University’s cartographic and aerial photographic resources. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • producing applications based on general programming languages and languages specific to GIS and WebGIS development environments; • designing Geographic Information Systems; • retrieving and organizing geographical data; • testing and using software for processing geographical information; • building geo-referenced geographical databases; • producing software for viewing and querying geographic information; • studying and applying 2D and 3D spatial analysis techniques to vector and raster data; • developing web publishing, search and download functions for documentary resources; • developing methodologies and techniques for processing statistical data; • elaborating satellite images. 3.5 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory FisTec Environmental Engineering Physics Lab The lab is active in various fields interested in applied physics in relation to the built environment: acoustics, lighting techniques, the thermophysics of buildings and materials, ambient comfort and interior environmental quality. It is involved in environmental verifications for analysis and conservation in the field of architectural and cultural heritage. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • building acoustics and the measurement passive acoustic requirements for buildings; • ambient acoustics (listening to music, concert halls, recording studios, auditoriums, theatres, classrooms, movie theatres, etc.); • outdoor acoustics (acoustic zoning, acoustic pollution from infrastructures, manufacturing zones, public performances spaces, techniques for the acoustic protection of the territory); • interior and exterior ambient light; • natural lighting and light conveyance devices; • lighting sources and devices; • microclimates and air quality; • thermophysical properties of materials, components and structures; • conservation of architectural and artistic-cultural heritage; • environmental specifications and upgrading; • transmission of water vapour in opaque elements; • surface and interstitial condensation; • building energy ratings; • civil and special plant-engineering; • environmental control for the conservation of architectural and artistic heritage; • thermal and hygrometric numeric simulations; • fluid dynamics simulations; • heat load assessment and projections for building energy consumption. 3.6 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory LabSCo Construction Sciences Lab LabSCo began testing construction materials in the late 1940s and, in 1961, became the Italian Republic’s official laboratory (Laboratorio Ufficiale della Repubblica italiana). The lab does research and outside projects on issues regarding Law 1086/71 and for experiments leading to new patents. It is actively involved in quality control at companies manufacturing concrete and steel for reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete in Italy and abroad. LabSCo is currently a European leader in studies on full-scale structures. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • static and dynamic tests on full-scale structures; • official verification and certification as customarily entrusted to Italian universities in the field of construction law; • physical and mechanical stress tests and special assessments on natural and artificial stones, concrete materials, bricks and wood; • physical and mechanical stress tests on inert materials and hydraulic binders for concrete; • mechanical stress tests and special assessments on steels for reinforced and prestressed concrete; • mechanical stress tests on metallic (steel) test specimens for buildings; • tests for verifying and qualifying of materials from steelworks, ironworks and factories producing structures in reinforced concrete, metals, wood and composite; • sound and ultrasound tests on stone and wall materials; • calibration of instruments and test machines. 3.7 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory LAMA Lab for Analysing Materials of Antique Origin The lab conducts research on materials once used in construction and decoration (archaeometry and deterioration studies) and on the techniques and materials of painting and ceramics, providing support for restoration projects in particular. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • collecting and preparing samples; • optical microscopy analyses; • colour micrograph; • mineralogical analyses by means of RX difractometry; • porosimetric analyses; • calculating water absorption; • calculating volumetric weight or apparent density; • chemical analyses; • calculating the C&O isotope for identifying white marbles; • infrared spectrophotometry; • topographic surface analyses with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and photographs; • qualitative and semi-quantitative chemical analyses by means of EDS microprobe interfaced with a SEM; • ion chromatography. 3.8 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory LARProject Support Lab The lab’s three divisions support individual works or urban scale projects throughout all phases of development and in the eventual management of their output: from conceptual drawings to realistic renderings, from virtual to physical rendition, from animation to film sequences, from online circulation to complex archiving. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • testing new research technologies for architectural and urban design; • computer-aided drawing and design (graphics, volumetric analyses, renderings); • dynamic representation of architecture (animations, simulations); • creating interactive archives (videos, hypertexts, web pages); • scale models (wood, metal, plastic materials) made with traditional methods and through the use of computer technology. 3.9 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory Me.La Multimedia Lab The lab concentrates on analysing and experimenting with systems and methods for producing and for representing what is created in the fields of visual arts, theatre and architecture. Its research and output relies on traditional communication channels (publishing, press and television) and the latest media (internet, satellite channels). It works with entities involved in regional management and the protection and conservation of cultural heritage, as well as research institutes and industry at large. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • making 3D interactive models, digital animation, videos, multimedia and editorial projects, internet sites, multimedia and interactive installations for exhibitions and other events; • elaborating and processing digital media; • coordinating, mounting and managing exhibitions, for the University’s multimedia space in particular; • researching, experimenting with and developing of new forms of representation, communication and interaction; • research in the field of multi-sensorial interaction and new interfaces for communicating architecture and design, cultural products, and the visual and performing arts; • organizing seminars, training courses and masters programme on new professions, as well as post-graduate training and refresher courses for public administration personnel; • cognitive, perceptive and emotional design: design methods oriented towards experimental and experiential verification. 3.10 Sistema laboratori Iuav Laboratory TerraLab for Earth Sciences The lab analyses the physical-mechanical characteristics of loose ground and rocks (volume and weight characteristics, consistency limits, attrition parameters and edometric tests) for investigating underground waters and the degradation of building materials. Specific expertise and areas of intervention: • developing and managing technical laboratory tools for physical and mechanical tests on grounds and rock; • analysing the physical-mechanical characteristics of loose ground and rock for investigating underground waters and accessing the degradation of construction materials and for geophysical prospecting; • developing research with other labs (especially FisTec, LabSCo and LAMA).
