Look Both Ways By ash and ash 12C
fears and sense of pessimism Look Both Ways explores how individuals face and overcome their fears and sense of pessimism. Meryl, Nick and Andy all live their daily lives through out the text feeling and thinking like this. These three characters are constantly thinking of the worst the situation could turn out, but slowly through out the text, they overcome this and learn to change their pessimistic ways.
Meryl • Meryl imagines death in all situations • She pictures death in her style of art work • Meryl says “It’s cheaper than therapy
Meryl’s imagination creates tragedies where there aren’t any and disasters where it is calm. • when real tragedy confronts her, such as the death of her father and witnessing the train accident, she is able to cope. • Meryl and Nick have something in common, they both see death • every where they go because this is what they fear the most.
Nick • Nick is also very pessimistic in certain situations • Nick will see images such as photos or pictures from real life situations • These images relate to his job as a photographer • Nick has been diagnosed with cancer • Nick sees pictures and images the cells in his body forming cancer or all the things in his life that may have caused his cancer such as smoking drinking or radiation.
Quotes “I’ve been seeing death everywhere this week end”. “Really?” “Yeah” “I just look at people and I see them dying” “So do I, so do, I imagine it happening all the time”. “Do u see it happening when u look at me? Do you see death?” “No” “Well that’s good…………” “ Do you see death when you look at me?” “ No, no I don’t”.
Andy • Andy is also afraid, not of death or dying, but of commitment • Andy’s previous marriage with Cathy was unsuccessful and he was not the perfect father to his two children • When he finds out that Anna is pregnant, he faces his biggest fear of his life and he responds by “Did you do this on purpose?”
As the film ends with the photomontage of Nick and Meryl, it shows Nick having his treatment for his cancer and surviving life and Meryl exhibiting her artwork. This shows that they have accepted life and not being afraid of what it may bring. Andy also overcomes his fear when through the mishap of his seatbelt not working, he decides that the right thing to do is go and be brave to sort everything out with Anna and get back together. Included in the photomontage at the end of the text is clips of Andy and Anna happily with their new born baby. This is just three characters in Look Both Ways that have overcome their fears, but everyone will overcome their fears if they try hard enough and try not to be too pessimistic.
