Look carefully at Henry VIII’s Coat of Arms. What does it depict (show)? Why do you think that a dragon has been added to the coat of arms?
Henry VII had added the Welsh Dragon to his coat of arms as he had a Welsh grandfather, Owain ap Tewdwr. He was also born in Wales, in Pembroke Castle and had been brought up there before fleeing to France during the War of the Roses. When Henry came back to Wales many Welsh Men pledged their loyalty to him and promised to help him become King of England. These men, along with many French mercenaries, marched with him to Bosworth Field where Richard III was slain and Henry was hailed as the new king – Henry VII.Henry VIII and his children kept the red dragon on their coats of arms partly to honour Henry and partly as a statement - to remind everyone that they were the rightful rulers of England and Wales.
