LOTE: Getting Started with Elluminate Online Workshops Lisa Dowse, SMR Program Planning & Development Officer-LOTE MLTAV Conference, Hemisphere, Moorabbin, May 15, 09
Finding out about Elluminate visit the Knowledge Bank Online Events website here: http://knowledgebank.globalteacher.org.au The site talks about the program, upcoming events, how to get training and book a room, and what Elluminate is. The conference website is another great resource, that’s here: http://knowledgebankconference2008.globalteacher.org.au/ It has links to all of conference session recordings and the other resources we created.
Using Elluminate & many of its tools texting in the LOTE typing on the whiteboard audio in the LOTE creating multimedia presentations in the LOTE to share with others creating surveys in the LOTE and using the graph tool to show the results
What students think… Students love it… The Year 8 and 9 boys were particularly enthusiastic and have been begging their teacher for it to happen again, perhaps with a secondary school. (Increasing engagement of Middle Years students, and boys in particular, is a goal of many schools.)
Students’ Comments Selamat siang Mrs. Dowse, the elluminate session was quite fun…The other students and I are looking forward to the next session.
Research about engaged learners… Springing into active learning Educational Leadership Volume 66 Number 3, November 2008; Pages 38–42 Allison Zmuda The collective mindset of students is often one of the biggest barriers to their achievement. Far too many students simply comply with teacher requests and ‘function like low-level bureaucrats’. Compliant learners tend only to answer teacher questions, while engaged learners raise extra questions and points of view. Compliant learners tend to limit their revision of written work to identified errors, while engaged learners consider overall feedback comments before deciding what to revise.
Great for… • transition programs between primary and secondary students • individualised learning, as students respond or create their own interactions at their own level • Lesson ideas… • use the graphing tool to do surveys and generate a graph • use the happy / sad face tool to have students answer questions in the target language and to consolidate comprehension • the motivation to use the hands-up tool will encourage reluctant speakers to identify themselves and participate
Authentic purpose How often do we create scenarios / role-plays that are only for learning not for real-life purposes? Elluminate gives us a forum to have communication in the target language for authentic purposes. Even better, when we can communicate with target language speakers… Communicating with target language speakers is a VELS standard. For some LOTEs it is very difficult to set up communication with target language speakers. Elluminate makes this more possible.
