  1. MOOCs

  2. Where are we?

  3. Where are we going? • “Christensen noted that Harvard Business School doesn't teach entry-level accounting anymore, because there is a professor out at Brigham Young University whose online accounting course "is just so good" that Harvard students use that instead. When outstanding becomes so easily available, average is over.” • "MOOCS will change the world and make the rest of higher education obsolete. Hyper-prestigious universities are driving all the change. Umm, I don't think so, folks," Jack Wilson, president emeritus of the University of Massachusetts

  4. Questions we asked • 27 responses – 23 unique institutions

  5. Status Today

  6. MOOCs in production today? Project for next year?

  7. Why?

  8. Discussing the possibility of granting credit?

  9. Considering monetizing your offerings?

  10. Heads up! Live participation needed!

  11. For discussion • IT in higher ed (or education in general) is replete with unfulfilled promises of how teaching and learning would be revolutionized. • Do we really (really, really) mean it this time? • Why will it happen (“stick”) this time? What’s different?

  12. For discussion • Accessibility and affordability are big “watch words” these days. MOOCs have been proposed as potential solutions to either or both… • Are MOOCs less costly to build and sustain than other models of education including bricks and mortar? • Are MOOCs a more affordable option for individuals to meet their career and life aspirations?

  13. A Familiar Question  • Channeling our good friend and colleague Brad (to name just one)… • Isn’t this just the sort of core app or service that higher education should collaborate to deliver for ourselves rather than rely on vendors to deliver?
