  2. Plug for Data Mining Course • Next semester I’ll teach a course in Data Mining • Tue – Thur, 5:30-6:45 • This (like databases) is a U/G course • Currently Data Mining is a special topics course but will be “regular” course soon • You can use it for technical elective • Focus is on data mining algorithms • Prereqs: programming (351), calculus • statistics / probabilities not required, but be prepared to learn

  3. Revised Grading Breakdown • We are not going to have as many programs and homework grade as I anticipated • We’ll have 3 HWs + 3 programs • Thus the % of total grade made up by HWs and programs will drop • Old breakdown: HW 20% programs 20% project 10% midterm 20% final 30% • New breakdown: 5 best HW and progs 7% each, project 15%, midterm 20%, final 20%

  4. Project Overview • Course project is to be done in groups of 2-4 • Each person must contribute • Final report describes roles of each member • Grade will not necessarily be the same member. • Involves learning, implementing and describing • Project ideas on the web (we’ll go over them today)

  5. Course Project Milestones • Tue Nov 13 (in class) • Each person turn in piece of paper with: • Your name • Your group’s name • List of the members of your group • Very brief (one or two sentence) description of project topic • Thur Nov 15 (in class) • I will give you recommended readings and other resources • Tue Dec 4 • Progress report due (more on this later) • Dec 13 - Dec 20 • Schedule demo w/ me • Turn in report and code at the demo
