Speed is a deciding factor for any web page. The faster your site, the more likely a customer is to stay on it, instead of just closing it in frustration after waiting too long. It also helps your site get ranked higher in Google Search. A fast page is a good page in the eyes of search engines, users and search engines. But how do you know if it’s fast? You test it. Then you optimize and test it again. Here’s a list of five free tools that help you do just that: info@freelancermap.com
1. Google PageSpeed Insights Speed is one of the more important SEO factors. And who to better test your SEO than the biggest, most-known search engine? Google’s PageSpeed Insights give your site a grade from 1 to 100, indicating how well it is performing. The higher the better. You want to aim for low 80s for a really responsive site. PageSpeed Insights measure how long it takes to render the first information on the webpage, called above-the-fold content. This is what you can see without scrolling. It also gives you the time it takes for your page to fully load, as well as mobile optimization. Indicators include button sizes, fonts, viewpoint configuration and others. info@freelancermap.com
2. GTmetrix GTmetrix is a really useful tool that combines a bunch of others into one. You get a grade from F to A, A being the best. Results are broken down into five different categories – PageSpeed, YSlow, waterfall breakdown, video and history. The first two are other tools. A waterfall breakdown details all interaction between a user and your web page when they try to access different types of content. GTmetrix also lets you switch up browsers to see how that affects your performance. Additionally, you can even check your stats with add-ins like Adblock Plus. info@freelancermap.com
3. Pingdom Pingdom is one of the best-known tools out there. It rates your site from 1 to 100, again, higher is better. It also splits its report into four sections: waterfall breakdown, performance grade, page analysis, and history. Moreover, you get a bunch of useful general stats like how big your site is, how many requests each domain gets and what content is requested most often. info@freelancermap.com
4. WebPageTest WebPageTest does a lot of what the above mentioned tools can, but offers a few specific things that might be extremely useful depending on your situation. For example, it offers tests from over 40 different locations. If you’re looking to conquer the global market, it’s worth a look. Additionally, you can chose from over 25 different browsers, including mobile. WebPageTest might give you a more accurate representation of your site’s performance than most other tools, since it does a “first view and repeat view”. When you test your site for the first time, the DNS lookup delay might be longer than normal. WebPageTest takes that into consideration. info@freelancermap.com
5. DareBoost DareBoost will help you make your site better even if you’re not that well-versed in optimization. It spits out a mark between 1 and 100, splitting it into successes, improvement suggestions and issues. DareBoost can give you example on any of those points, telling you how to improve on the or why you should consider changing something. You can also download your report as PDF or even start monitoring it. That lets DareBoost periodically check it and sends you an email alert if a new issue appears. info@freelancermap.com
