  2. FAITH

  3. Faith Is the theological virtue by which we believe in God and believe all that he said and revealed to us. By faith “man freely commits his entire self to God.” CCC 1814

  4. Faith The believer seeks to know God and do God’s will. “Living faith” work (s) through charity. The gift of faith remains in one who has not sinned against it. CCC 1814 - 1815

  5. Faith Faith apart from works is dead (James 2:2)”: when it is deprived of hope and love, faith does not fully unite the believer to Christ and does not make him/her a living member of his body. CCC 1813 - 1816

  6. Faith The disciple of Christ must not only keep the faith and live on it, but also profess it, confidently bear witness to it and spread it. CCC 1816

  7. SINS AGAINST FAITH CCC 2087 - 2089

  8. SIN AGAINST FAITH Voluntary doubt about the faith disregards or refuses to hold true what God has revealed and the Church proposes for belief. CCC 2088

  9. SIN AGAINST FAITH Involuntary doubt refers to the hesitation in believing, difficulty in overcoming objections connected with faith or also aroused by its obscurity. If deliberately cultivated doubt can lead to spiritual blindness. CCC 2088 (157)

  10. SIN AGAINST FAITH Incredulity (disbelief) is the neglect of revealed truth or the willful refusal to assent (agree) to it. CCC 2089

  11. SIN AGAINST FAITH Heresy is the obstinate (stubborn) post- baptismal denial of some truth which must be believed with divine and catholic faith.. CCC 2089

  12. SIN AGAINST FAITH Apostasy is the total repudiation of the Christian faith CCC 2029 (162, 817)

  13. SIN AGAINST FAITH Schism Is the refusal of submission of the Roman Pontiff or of communion with the members of the Church subject to him

  15. Hope Is the theological virtue by which we desire the kingdom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our trust in Christ’s promises. CCC 1817 -1821

  16. SINS AGAINST HOPE

  17. WAY OF SINNING AGAINST Hope Despair, man ceases to hope for his/her personal salvation from God, for help in attaining it or the forgiveness of his/her sins. CCC 2091

  18. WAY OF SINNING AGAINST Hope Presumption (1st kind) Man presumes upon his own capacities, hoping to be able to save himself without help from God CCC 2092

  19. WAYS OF SINNING AGAINST Hope Presumption (2nd kind) He presumes upon God’s almighty power or his mercy (hoping to obtain his forgiveness without conversion and glory without merit) CCC 2092

  20. CHARITY/LOVE

  21. Charity Is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God Jesus made charity the new commandment. CCC 1822 -1826

  23. WAY OF SINNING AGAINST Charity/Love 1. Indifference – neglects or refuses to reflect on divine charity; it fails to consider its prevenient (expectant) goodness and denies its power CCC 2094

  24. WAY OF SINNING AGAINST Charity/Love 2. Ingratitude – fails or refuses to acknowledge divine charity and to return him love for love CCC 2094

  25. WAY OF SINNING AGAINST Charity/Love 3. Spiritual sloth (laziness) goes so far as to refuse the joy that comes from God and to be repelled by divine goodness. CCC 9024

  26. WAY OF SINNING AGAINST Charity/Love 4. Hatred of God – comes from pride. It is contrary to love of God, whose goodness it denies, and whom it presumes to curse as the one who forbids sins and inflicts punishments . CCC 2094

  36. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Superstition Is the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes. It can even affect the worship we offer the true God CCC 2111

  37. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT IDOLATRY Not only refers to false pagan worship. It remains a constant temptation to faith. Idolatry consists in divinizing what is not God. CCC 2113

  38. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Divination Placing our trust for the future in things such as horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, omens and using clairvoyants rather than God’s providence CCC 2115

  39. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Divination All forms of divination are to be rejected: Horoscopes Astrology Palm reading Interpretation of omens, and lots Clairvoyance Recourse to mediums CCC 2116

  40. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Magic & Sorcery One attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over others CCC 2117

  41. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Spiritualism Often implies divination or magical practices. CCC 2117

  42. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Irreligion God’s first commandment condemns the main sins of irreligion: tempting God, in words or deeds, sacrilege, and simony. CCC 2118

  43. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Tempting God Consist in putting his goodness and almighty power to the test by word or deed.

  44. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Sacrilege Consists in profaning or treating unworthily the sacraments, liturgical actions, as well as persons, things, or places consecrated to God. CCC 2120

  45. SINS AGAINST 1ST COMMANDMENT Sacrilege Is a grave sin especially when committed against the Eucharist, for in this sacrament the true Body and Blood of Christ is made substantially present for us. CCC 2120

  46. FORBIDS Simony Is defined as the buying or selling of spiritual things. I CCC 2121

  47. FORBIDS Atheism The denial in theory and/or practice that God exists. Atheism is a sin against the virtue of religion required by the first commandment of the law. CCC 2123

  48. FORBIDS Apostasy The total repudiation of the Christian faith. CCC2089
