Safety Training The picture frame project was part of the Industrial Engineering and Technology Career Pathway unit. Students were expected to complete a blueprint of the project, complete tool and personal safety training and follow a set of instructions to complete the project. Safety training included directions such as how to use the tools properly and safely, personal safety such as wearing safety glasses and demonstrations by the teacher for doing each of the steps involved. Safety was the most important issue in this assignment. The final grade for the project was based on safety.
Procedure Cut a 3 ½” square wood block Decorate the edges Sand all surfaces Polyurethane Safety Mitre Saw – teacher permission, 4’ safety zone, keep the saw blade down until the blade stops completely Router Table – teacher permission, 4’ safety zone, hold with 2 hands, push from right to left Picture Frame Base Instructions
Procedure Cut a 10 ½” plexiglass strip Remove the protective coating from 1 side only Mark a 5 ½” line on the protected side Heat the plastic at the 5 ½” line Bend the plastic and cool with cold water Sand the edges of the plastic strip Safety Strip Heater – Do not touch the strip heater for any reason. Finishing Sander – the sander may only touch the object you are sanding. Picture Frame Holder Instructions
Conclusion This project was done as a real life career modeling experience for the students. The students performed well, learned a number of skills related to the Industrial Engineering and Technology Career pathway, and completed the project safely.
