Prejudice (attitude) Can lead to… • To distinguish between prejudice and discrimination • To explain Christian teaching on prejudice and discrimination • To evaluate issues of race and colour Discrimination (action) Using p.80 write a definition of Prejudice. Write a definition of Discrimination. Give 3 reasons why someone could be prejudiced. **What Christian teaching would be against prejudice?

  3. What can people be prejudiced against? Race & Colour – whatever your ethnic origin, you have the same right to be treated fairly with the same opportunities as anyone else Religion & Belief – Christian, Jedi or Atheist, you should be treated fairly at work & your conscience in certain matters respected (eg option to not work Sundays) Age – no matter what age, you should have fair & equal treatment at work Disability – employers should make adjustments for your disability so you can have same opportunities at work Gender – women, men, transgendered, single or married should all have same rights Sexual Orientation – LGBT or straight, you should have same rights & opportunities.

  4. Complete the gap fill. Draw a box around this definition. Write out 3 Christian teachings against prejudice – for each one, explain how it proves that prejudice is wrong. Facts about Racism in the UK today In your experience, do you think England is a racist country? • 30% of all Britons admitted making comments or being involved in discussions which could be considered racist • Almost 40% confessed to using the phrase ‘I’m not a racist, but...' when discussing race issues • 1 in 10 people have been told by someone close to them that they are racist • Racism is higher in the North of the UK, among poorer, less educated, older white people • Nearly 88,000 racist incidents were recorded in Britain's schools between 2007 and 2011, the BBC has found. (Bullying, name calling, physical abuse). • In 2006, black people were 6 times more likely than whites to be stopped and searched, and Asians are twice as likely.
