Sexual Identity Has Two Distinctive Meanings: 1. Sexual identity based on sexual orientation- describes how a person identifies r/t their sexual orientation (heterosexual, homosexual). 2. Sexual identity based on sexual characteristics- describes with which a person identifies, or is identified (man, women).
Sexual Identity • There are five main influences that are involved with sexual identity: • Personal • Family • Cultural • Religious • Social standards
Personal influences • Children seek to explore their own bodies • How they are treated by the outside influences will have them create an image of a boy or a girl. • By age three, this concept will stay with them and they know what is “acceptable” of them in their world.
Family Influences • The environment in which a person lives influences people’s conduct and orientations, and families are at the center of the circle. • Parent-child relationships, hx of sexual abuse, family beliefs and values in regards to human sexuality, sexual expressions, all play a role into the sexual identity of a person.
Cultural Influences • Some cultures dictate roles as feminine or masculine, others let individuals explore with as little influence on what is considered “masculine” or “feminine”
Religious Influences • Some religions judge sexual decisions as moral or immoral • The importance of getting married and starting a family is important in many religions. • Men making the money and women staying home is another religious belief that defines the identity of a “man” and a “woman”.
Social Influences • The range of attitudes about sexuality extends from a traditional view of sex only within marriage to allowing individuals determine what is right to them. • People will always differ in beliefs about sexual ethics. • Society decides which modes of dress, kinds of behavior are appropriate to each sex.
Sexual Identity Every aspect of living influences how a person is going to respond to their environment. What they are taught by family, religion, and society is something that affects and creates who they become.
