  3. The NJ Licensing System • All NJ motorists must carry a valid permit/license & valid registration & valid proof of insurance when operating a motor vehicle. • Name changes must be reported to DMV within TWO WEEKS • In-state residence change must be reported within ONE WEEK

  4. Out of State Residents • A motorist who moves to NJ has 60 days or until their current license is expired (whichever time is less) to apply for a NJ driver’s license

  5. Types of NJ Driver’s License • Class D: The common driver’s license (what you and I have) • Class A,B,C: Large Buses, HAZMAT • Class E: Motorcycle • Class F: Moped (don’t embarrass yourself) • Class G: Farmers • Boat License: Water Safety Program

  6. License Cycle • After you reach your basic license (age 18) you are issued a license for 4 years • After the age of 70 motorists are issued a license every two years…….for obvious reasons! • Under 21 motorists’ photos look different

  7. Digital Driver’s License • MVC now uses a digital photo system and a 6-point identification system to prevent fraudulent identifications • Any restrictions a motorist might have will be listed ON THE LICENSE. (Example: Eyesight, Physical Handicap )

  8. Graduated Licensing System • NJ uses the GDL system to gradually introduce driving to young motorists up to the age of 21 years old. • This system has dramatically cut down on the amount of car accidents • Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among youth ages 15 to 20.

GDL: 3 Stages of Licensing • 16 Years of Age: After you have passed the driver examination with an 80% or above you can take your 6 hours of behind the wheel instruction then your permit is issued • 17 Years of Age: Take the behind the wheel test at the DMV for your probationary license • 18 Years of Age: Basic License

  10. Permit Restrictions • No driving between 11:01 p.m. until 5 a.m. • No cell phones or other electronic devices • Front-seat passenger MUST be 21 or older and have had a NJ D.L. for at least 3 years • Passengers must be from household PLUS ONE ADDITIONAL PASSENGER • Must drive for at least 6 months

  11. Probationary License Restrictions • No driving between 11:01 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. • No cell phones or other devices • Passengers: limited to dependents of the of the license holder and one additional person, unless accompanied by a parent/guardian.

  12. Basic License • 18 Years Old • Must have driven for at least one year • Update license at DMV • Issued for 4 years

  13. Lost or Stolen ID's • Lost or stolen permits can be replaced IN PERSON for $3.00 at the DMV (if you are under 17 a driving school needs to apply for the duplicate) • Lost or stolen License should be reported to the police immediately to prevent fraud • http://www.citibank.com/us/cards/cardserv/advice/commercial.htm
