Animal AdvocatesWebQuest Presented by Stephanie Keydel Professor Yang EDU 505 Fall 2010
This dolphin needs YOU. I need your help!
In Danger • Animals that have very few of their kind left are called endangered, or threatened. • Animals are endangered for many reasons, but most of the threats are caused by humans; we hunt them and destroy their habitats ( the places where they live).
Your Mission • The mission of this WebQuest is to become an Animal Advocate. • This means you become a voice for the rights of animals, since they cannot speak for themselves. • Animals all over the world will thank you for your efforts!
Your Task • With a partner, you will research 5 different endangered or threatened species, and complete “Fast Facts” cards for them. • You will then choose one animal to create an adoption poster for, in order to inspire people to help your animal • The last task is individual. You will address the issue of endangered species and how the world can help save the animals in essay form.
Process: Double click the documents for complete directions • Getting Started & Fast Fact card instructions • Adoption Poster instructions • Essay Instructions
Evaluation of Tasks • Did you and your partner cooperate and evenly split the work? • Do you have 5 Fast Fact cards that contain the necessary information? • Is your adoption poster well organized with pertinent information, visually appealing, and convincing? • Is your essay thought provoking, well organized, and contain 2 reasons for endangerment and 3 actions to reverse the damage? Do you have a persuasive conclusion?
Ask Yourself these Questions: Tasks 1 and 2: Task 3: • Cards: • Did you and your partner work well together? Did you visit each site given on the links page? • Do you have 5 Fast fact cards? • Do they contain the necessary facts? • Are they visually appealing and neat? • Poster: • Did you complete more detailed research and take notes on the animal you chose? • Did you log into glogster and create an adoption poster together? • Do you have at least 5 facts and 3 paragraphs of information about your animal? • Could somebody learn all about the plight of your animal from your poster? • Is it well written and interesting? • Is your poster convincing ? • Is your essay word processed and free from spelling and grammatical errors? • Does your essay have a conclusion, 5 body paragraphs, and a persuasive conclusion? • Did you print your essay out and turn it in? • Did you answer both questions asked of you on the Process slide document? • Did you explain how human actions have aided to the destruction of animals and their habitats? • Did you include 3 ways in which we can help restore our animal populations and their habitats? • Is your essay well written and authentic? • Did you include any other ideas or thoughts about why we should protect our endangered animals?
Conclusion • Animals are an important part of our planet. We need to take care of them and their habitats! • Congratulations on becoming an Animal Advocate; now you are qualified to educate others about saving our animals!
Teacher Page - Tips • Make sure your students don’t spend too much time just looking at the pictures of the animals – you might want to set time limits for research, or say they must have at least 2 fast fact cards done by a certain time. • I would implement this WebQuest after an introductory lesson on wildlife conservation/global issues. • Schedule class time so the students can share their fact cards and their glogs together; they need time to present their findings!
