  1. The Prevailing Winds

  2. Wind is the movement of air in the atmosphere • Wind is one of the most important features of weather • Winds that affect large areas (weather around the world)are called prevailing winds

  3. Causes of the Prevailing Winds • Prevailing winds are caused by a combination of convection currents and the Earth’s eastward rotation • Prevailing winds are affected by the seasons

  4. Winds are caused by differences in temperature and air pressure • The air moves from an area of high pressure to the area of low pressure • The greater the difference in pressure, the stronger the wind will be

  5. Effects of the Prevailing Winds • Distributes large amounts of solar energy from the equator to the colder parts of the world • Brings colder air southwards • Carries moisture to help cause precipitation • Rising air is warm and moist causing low pressure system • Falling air is cold and dry causing high pressure system Pg 516

  6. Science in the News • 4 Earth Science Articles Due Oct. 12 • Must have: • Original Article (with source) • Summary of article • Why is it important • Personal Opinions
