E N D
What is an abstract and what are its parts? • What is it? • Abbreviated (shortened) version of your science fair report. Only composed of around 250 words. Placed at the beginning of your project and on your display board to give your audience a preview of your project. • Parts: • Introduction • Problem Statement • Procedures • Results • Conclusions
Introduction • State your purpose • How does your experiment affect others? Why is it important? • Sell your project
Problem Statement • Identify/state the problem you solved. • Include your hypothesis • Gives the reader insight into how you approached your experiment.
Procedures • How did you approach your experiment. • DO NOT state all of your exact procedures • DO NOT state all of your materials. • Remember, this is an overview. Be BRIEF!! Procedures: Do this first Do this second Do this third Do this fourth Do this fifth Do this sixth Do this seventh TOO DETAILED!!!
Results • State the outcome(s) of your experiment. • Must reference specific data in your report (ex. Averages, maximum value, minimum values, etc.) • Do not use terms such as: • Most • Sometimes • Roughly • Maybe
Conclusions • Did you meet your objectives? • Did your hypothesis prove correct or wrong? • How do you think your project has made a contribution to the “greater” society (beyond yourself and our class).
Abstract “No No’s” • Avoid language/terms that the average person would not understand. • Do not abbreviate! • No tables or graphs • Not the place to cite sources.
