Using line to show the ILLUSION of space Optical Illusions
The Elements of art • These are tools that artists use to help communicate something to the viewer • They are line, shape, texture, value, color, line and form. • These can be used alone or in different combinations.
Review • So far, we have used symbols to communicate, but we paid attention to SPACE (which is an element of art) • Now we will look at line and how line can show depth
Line • A line is the distance between to points • Can be an actual line or an implied line • Line can show depth by….. • Lines closer together • Lines farther apart
Optial Illusions • Optical Art is a mathematically-themed form of Abstract art, which uses repetition of simple forms and colors to create vibrating effects, moiré patterns, foreground-background confusion, an exaggerated sense of depth, and other visual effects. • Showed the illusion of motion or space, through the use of LINE • They are objects the differ from reality • A group of artists created a type of art called OP art. It dealt with space and depth. • Began as a period of exploration for abstract artists such as Victor Vasarely and MC Esher
1960s the works become OP art Beginning in 1966 Bridget Riley began to produce color-based op art
Victor Vasarely • French abstract painter born 1908-1997
