  1. Fall 2011 Science Fair Papers

  2. Science Fair Outline • You are to find, research and write a paper that explains a science experiment idea. • This paper is worth 10% of your grade so not doing this assignment could determine whether or not you pass this class • After reading the papers that I receive I will choose several that I consider to be the best. I will invite those students to participate in the VOISE Science Fair in December. • Students who are chosen will receive a decent amount of extra credit for taking the time to perform the experiment, analyze the data and create a presentation explaining it.

  3. Step 1: Find an Experiment You may use either of these two websites to help you come up with a topic or you may come up with one on your own. Please make sure it is testable though! • www.sciencebuddies.com • http://www.all-science-fair-projects.com/

  4. Step 2: Basic Experimental Info Once you have found a science fair project that interests you answer the following question about it: • What is the purpose of your experiment?(Hint- What are you trying to figure out?) • What is your experimental question? (Hint- What question are you trying to answer? Should be phrased “How does _____________ affect ______________?”

  5. Step 2: Basic Experimental Info • What is the dependent variable? (Hint- What are you measuring in the experiment? OR What is being affected?) • What is the independent variable?(Hint- What are you controlling or changing? OR What is doing the affecting?) • What is the treatment?(Hint- What is happening to the dependent variable? • What is the experimental group(s)?(Hint- What are the different versions of the independent variable? OR What are the different treatments that are being used?) • What is the control group?(Hint- What is the group that is not given the treatment?

  6. Step 2: Basic Experimental Info • What are the controlled variables?(Hint- What are some things that you are going to keep the same throughout all your testing?) • How many trials will you do?(Hint- How many times will you perform the experiment to make sure your results are as accurate as possible?) • What is your sample size?(Hint-How many things will you test?) • You can answer all these questions on Page 3 of your packet. You will need to save it as a separate file and submit to the VOISE Website no later than TUESDAY.

  7. Step 3: Background Info • Now you should find out as much background information as possible about the topic of your project. Write the information you find on Page 4. Make sure to research the following information: • Background information: Find information on the following and do forget to record the websites where you find your information!! (Hint- Google, Yahoo, ask ARE NOT SOURCES) • Important Vocabulary/ Definitions • Basic information about the topic • Conclusions from past experiments • Hypothesis: Based on the information you learned about your topic come up with a hypothesis • Your hypothesis should be phrased in the following way: • “If I (explain what you are doing in the experiment), then (explain what you think will happen), because (back up your thoughts with the research you found). • This page is due NO later than THURSDAY.

  8. Step 4: The Procedure • Write down the step by step process that you would take to perform the experiment. You may use page 5 to do this. • BE SPECIFIC- (Hint- Make sure to include amounts, and tools that you use.) • This is Due No later than FRIDAY.

  9. Step 5: Organization • Review your notes, information and experimental overview and answer the following questions: • Would you feel comfortable performing this experiment MOSTLY on your own? (meaning a little bit of help from Ms. McCauley • Would you be interested in performing your experiment and showing it at the V.O.I.S.E. Science Fair? • DUE no later than FRIDAY

  10. Step 6: Writing the Paper • Use all the information that you found during the first five steps to write your Science Fair paper. • Use the information on page 7 to help you plan and write your paper. • Make sure to edit and read your paper out loud to yourself to check for grammatical errors. • Use the Rubric on the last page (page 8) of this packet to help you get the best grade possible

  11. Step 7: Works Cited Page • On this page you should include where you found all your information. • You must have at least 3-5 different websites that you found information from

  12. DUE DATE • FINAL PAPER is DUE TUESDAY Oct 25th.
