Background • Major changes to the Public Service Interpreting industry in recent years • A growing and increasingly competitive and professional sector • Increasing use of technology, including telephone interpreting • Changes in demand for different languages • Need for more flexible and affordable training • Opportunity for linguists with rare languages to gain a qualification • An increased emphasis on quality and professionalism in the sector • Leeds Met already specialises in “applied language” education • Several universities already offer courses in Conference Interpreting • We already had links with several local Language Service Providers who helped us design the courses to meet their needs

Programme development • 2010-2012 Knowledge Transfer Scheme in collaboration with thebigword • Development of the; • Vocational Certificate in Interpreting (Level 4) • Vocational Diploma in Interpreting (Level 5) • 2012-2013 Higher Education Innovation Fund • Development of the; • Professional Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Level 6) • Advanced Professional Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Level 7 Masters)

Aims of Programme • To provide a flexible pathway for linguists to train and achieve a formal qualification • To enable more linguists to gain employment as Public Service Interpreters • To help raise the general standards and professionalism of the industry • To offer accessible university accredited courses with quality standards maintained through Leeds Met quality assurance process and the involvement of External Examiners from the industry and other universities

Key features of the courses • The training courses are Part Time and delivered entirely online • All information, material, instructions, exercises and assessment is via the International School of Linguists Virtual Learning Environment • Students are supported by a personal tutor via the VLE and e-mail • There is no need to attend the university to take or pass the course • Students can study flexibly to help with other work or family commitments • The courses can be taken by people with any language combinations as long as they have the required level of English • The courses take between 3 and 6 months to complete so students work at their own speed as their professional commitments allow • Apart from the initial course applicants must have existing PSI experience, even as a volunteer • The focus is on the core skills and attributes of professional Public Service Interpreters

  10. Who are the courses for? Vocational Diploma in Interpreting (L4) The Certificate will enable you to learn the basics of Public Service Interpreting. You will gain a fundamental understanding of the role and responsibilities of an interpreter. Vocational Diploma in Interpreting (L5) The Diploma is designed to teach you how to be a professional Public Service Interpreter. You will be able to demonstrate that you have a detailed knowledge of the role and responsibilities of an interpreter with practical experience. Professional Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (L6) The Professional Diploma is designed to develop your professional interpreting skills to a higher level and enable you to take on more complicated interpreting work, focusing on nuances and deeper industry issues. This course aims to meet industry standard for the profession. Advanced Professional Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Masters L7) The Advanced Professional Diploma is a research orientated course focusing on professionalising and contributing to the interpreting industry as well as developing your own specialist area of interpreting. more

Course Structure Vocational Certificate in Interpreting (L4) • Overview of Interpreting (15 credits) • Covers the role of the interpreter, including the Code of Conduct and Scope of Practice • Essential Professional Skills (15 credits) • Covers the essential professional skills for interpreters, the legal framework covering interpreting and strategies for continuing professional development • Interpreting Skills (15 credits) • Covers the act of interpreting, interpreting strategies, note-taking, short term memory, issues of register, tone, person, clarity and speed of delivery Vocational Diploma in Interpreting (L5) • Further Professional Skills (15 credits) • Explores ethics and social skills for interpreters, as well as providing advice on administrative skills and CPD. • Public Service Interpreting Skills (15 credits) • Contains an in-depth discussion of practical techniques in face-to-face interpreting, telephone interpreting and sight translation in public service settings. • Language Skills & Cultural Knowledge for Interpreting (15 credits) • Covers language development skills to maintain high-level language competency, as well as discussing cultural issues in public service interpreting.

Course Structure Professional Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (L6) • Advanced Professional & Ethical Skills (20 credits) • This module covers advanced professional skills and ethical issues relating to public service interpreting, equipping you with the ability to justify your solutions to interpreting dilemmas with sound ethical reasoning. • Advanced Public Service Interpreting Skills (20 credits) • You will delve into advanced public service interpreting skills and language strategies, to foster a high-level ability to interpret in various demanding interpreting scenarios. Advanced Professional Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (L7) • Becoming an Advanced Practitioner (20 credits) • This module covers advanced language development skills and specialist knowledge relating to the health, legal and social settings of public service interpreting in order to equip you to be an expert in your chosen field. • Understanding & Contributing to the Public Service Interpreting Industry (20 credits) • This module examines professional and ethical knowledge and research in order to understand and contribute to the public service interpreting industry as a whole.
