Types • Closed system • Movement between the status levels is impossible • A person is assigned a status at birth and remains at that level throughout life • Open system • movement between the status level IS possible • Ease depends on the degree of openness in a society
2 types in Today’s societies • Caste System • Based on one’s ascribed status • A newborn life long status is determined by the status of his/her parents; inherited • Forbids exogamy- marriage outside one’s status • Practices endogamy- marriage within ones own status
Example • Very common in India • Brahmans- Priests, scholars • Kshatriyas (Ksha-tree-uh)– Rulers, nobles, soldiers • Vaisyas(vahys-yuh) – merchants, bankers, • Sudras (soo-drah)– laborers, artisans • Dalits – “Untouchables” • 1950- India outlawed discrimination, but still happens throughout certain areas
2nd System • Class system • Soley based on your achieved status • Individuals have some control over their place in the stratisification system • Depending on talent, effort, opportunity can move up or down social class • Example: The United States <____________________|_______________________> Closed Open
Dimensions • Social class is a grouping of people with similar levels of wealth, power, and prestige On your notes: • In pairs, define what you think wealth, power, and prestige means • Put in order what you think is most important in terms of social class • Give 3 examples of people in the US who have used one or all to improve their social class
Wealth • Assets- value of everything the person owns and income • Power • Ability to control the behavior of others. Power can be based on force, possession of a skill or knowledge • Prestige • Respect, honor, recognition of an individual receives from other members of society • Exs: income, occupation, education, background
