BASIN WIDE MASTER PLAN & PLANNING STUDIES HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT SINCE 1950 IN 25 BASINS Dicle - THESE STUDIES INCLUDE DEVELOPMENT OF • WATER POTENTIAL (SURFACE & GROUND WATER), • SECTORIAL WATER DEMANDS, • DEMAND- SUPPLY BALANCE, • PROJECT FORMULATIONS Total potential of average annual surface water runoff : 186 billion m3 Total potential of average annual groundwater runoff : 69 billion m3

  7. FLOOD FORECASTING & EARLY WARNING SYSTEM Involves development and implementation of real-time measuring and forecasting network as well as early warning systems.

  9. WATER QUALITY MONITORING STUDIES Water Quality Observation System • Determination of existing conditions for quality and quantity of water resources • Development of recommendations for needed precautions when these resources are used as domestic water

  10. STUDIES FOR ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE The foreseed impacts of climate change are decrease in water resources and increase in flood damages. The needed studies for adaptation to climate change have been started.

STUDIES FOR ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE Adaptation includes; • Construction of any possible storage facilities of which their projects are available • Application of economical irrigation systems • Completion of flood prevention activities which are at %20 level at the moment • Hydroelectric power plants which are renewable energy resources must be completed as soon as possible due to their emission advantage

THE STUDIES ON HARMONIZATION OF EU WATER LEGISLATION CAPACITY BUILDING SUPPORT TO THE WATER SECTOR IN TURKEY(2008-2010) • Implementation plans for the Water Framework Directive and Dangerous Substance Directive • Draft Management Plan for Buyuk Menderes River Basin CAPACITY IMPROVEMENT FOR FLOOD FORECASTING AND FLOOD CONTROL IN THE TURKEY- BULGARIA CROSS BORDER COOPERATION REGION (TR0602.15)(2007-2011) • Flood forecasting and early warning system which will operate parallel with the Bulgarian system • Four hydro meteorological stations in Meriç and Tunca Rivers • Riverbed regulation works along 7.5 km part of Meriç River

Forestation Works In 2003 a protocol signed between General Directorate of DSI, General Directorate of Forestry, and General Directorate of Aforestration and Erosion Control for forestation of basins of energy dams. Within the context of this protocol forestation works initiated by DSI and approximately 20 500 ha areas forested by planting 30 million tree plants in Turkey by the end of 2008.
