The Sheep Mountain anticline in Bighorn Basin, Wyoming (part of the Rockies).
Anticlines • Formed from tectonic pressure. • “A” or dome shaped. • When pushed together the rocks either fold upward (anticline) or fracture (fault). • Older strata rock is located in the center. • Most anticlines are thought to be created about 70 million years ago while the Rockies where being formed.
Anticlinal Traps • Usually a long, oval dome with a layer of impermeable rock. • The impermeable layer blocks the upward flow of hydrocarbons. • May become a petroleum reservoir.
Terminology • Anticline-Folds in the rock layers that forms an arch. • Syncline-Folds in the rock layers that forms a trough-like bend. • Monocline-Folds in rock layers that creates a slight bend.
