  1. Vessels of Christ II Timothy 2

  2. Introduction • Spaghetti Dinner

  3. Take Home Truth • As vessels of God, we must pour out conversation worthy of Christ.

  4. As vessels of God, we must pour out conversation worthy of Christ • We must carefully consider our conversation according to our calling • We must carefully consider ways to cleanse our conversation • We must carefully consider what to avoid in our conversations as vessels of Christ

  5. We must carefully consider our conversation according to our calling • You have different vessels for different purposes. • As Christians, we can’t be proper vessels of God if we are unclean. • Verses 20-21? • If you are unclean, you serve no purpose to the master.

  6. We must carefully consider our conversation according to our calling • V 15-- We are to rightly handle the Word of truth, why? • Because it is the power of God as I Corinthians 1:18 says. • It is God breathed in II Timothy 3: 16. • It is the salvation of our souls in James 1:21. • It is the basis from which all things proceed in our faith. It is to guide our interaction with God and man, which purifies that which comes out of our vessels.

  7. Application • We must carefully consider our conversation according to our calling: • You are a vessel for the use of a holy Master. Everything we say, especially concerning His Word, reflects directly upon his character.

  8. We must carefully consider ways to cleanse our conversation • Christ’s resurrection and the Gospel are why we do what we do. • We are soldiers bent on pleasing Him, we are athletes that must compete by the rules, and we are to work honestly to attain what we sow for • What is the perquisite to that?

  9. We must carefully consider ways to cleanse our conversation • Verse 19 toward the end “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” • Verse 22 admonishes us to pursue righteousness, love, faith, and peace.

  10. We must carefully consider ways to cleanse our conversation • Philippians 4:8 “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things”

  11. We must carefully consider ways to cleanse our conversation • When we pursue the things of God. When we clean up our mouths and thoughts we will pour out Godliness from our vessel.

  12. Application • We must carefully consider ways to cleanse our conversation: • Don’t talk the talk--just talk. Let our words reflect our hearts. Let us “Guard our hearts, for out of it flows the springs of life” as Proverbs 4 says. Be a vessel that pours out the rich, sweet things of God, not the rotten bile of the devil!

  13. We must carefully consider what to avoid in our conversations as vessels of Christ • Verse 23—Have nothing to do with foolish/ignorant controversies. • Verse 24, not being quarrelsome. • Verse 16 Avoid irreverent babbling.

  14. We must carefully consider what to avoid in our conversations as vessels of Christ • Ephesians 5:4 “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.” • Ecclesiastes 5:2 “Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few.”

  15. We must carefully consider what to avoid in our conversations as vessels of Christ • Matthew 15:18 “But what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person” • We’ve got the poison, He’s got da remedy: • We are to be kind, and patient and answer with gentleness. Whew, that’s humbling.

  16. Conclusion • As vessels of God, we must pour out conversation worthy of Christ: • Are we considering what that means? • Are we considering what should be pouring from us in light of our calling? • Are we considering ways to cleanse our vessel in order to be “honorable” for him as the text stated? • Are we considering those things to avoid as vessels of Christ that would ensnare us, and crack us, and render our speech useless to Him?
